Monster Raving Looneys

"Talking of missing parties the most glaring omission is probably Robert Kilroy-Silk's new party Veritas????"

Hardly makes any impact (count it as part of 'Independents') but if you felt like it you could add them in to the sixteenth slot.

Personally I think there are too many parties. They take up space but don't add anything to the game. I'd have had:

Conservative

Labour

Liberal Democrat

Green Party

Respect Coalition

Plaid Cymru

Scottish National

DUP

UUP

Sinn Fein

SDLP

Veritas

Makes twelve parties, fits on three pages.

Or:

Conservative + UUP

Labour + SDLP

Liberal Democrat + Alliance

Green Party + Respect

Plaid Cymru

Scottish National

DUP

Sinn Fein

Which makes eight parties, on two pages.

You don't want to overload the game. Having the SSP might make it slightly more realistic, but they won't win anywhere. Same for Scottish Pensioners Party, Forward Wales, the UK Unionist Party etc

Actually the Scottish Socialists have won seats. They have about 5 IIRC, gained through the PR element of the system.

The platform system in the game might have to be re-adjusted to accomodate the Monster Raving Loony Parties position on certain issues :D.

It would be nice to see even more smaller parties in too, such as the Socialist Alliance, Socialist Labour, Veritas etc.

It would also be nice to be able to use a Debit Card to purchase the game as I sadly don't have a Credit Card and am reluctant to use Paypal.

I suggest that people making new scenarios make two versions. One with all the parties and another with all the minor ones (1%) lumped into Independent. Won't take much work and offers a choice to people who prefer playability to realism.

Yes - in the Scottish Parliament. They would be a vital part of any Holyrood sim, (or even a European one) but are pretty irrelevent in a Westminster election.

Frankly the minor parties chosen do seem to be arbitrary. Respect - for instance - have never won any seats anywhere (Galloway was only a Respect MP because he left the Labour Party after he'd been elected as a Labour MP). At least the Monster Raving Loonies have won local elections.

Also the Loonies have been going for about 20 years - Respect hasn't and probably will disappear soon as its a one man party, like Veritas will and Scargill's Socialist Labour Party has.

And "Independents" are just that - independent. You can't lump them together - as a party-based game you may as well leave them out.

There is a design argument, if not a thematic one, for ignoring Northern Ireland entirely from the game, seeming as its parties and those of the rest of Britain are utterly unconnected. You could almost separate them out as their own game, and simply announce the seats there (for the NI parties) in the UK General Election edition.

Respect have won seats. They won a council seat in Tower Hamlets a year ago. They pick up 15-20% often in London. And bearing in mind they've only been in existence for two years they're not doing too badly. They have an MP (even if he wasn't elected as a Respect MP) and stand a very good chance of getting him in to the next parliament - no self-respecting sim would go without the King vs. Galloway battle in Bethnal Green which is without doubt the single most explosive race of the whole election - Galloway has received death threats from (bizarrely) Muslim extremists and King has been terrorized by Respect supporters.

And leaving out the Independents couldn't be done either, as there is a sitting Indy MP extremely likely to win his seat again.
