This is important to note because Walsh has long been rumored as a potential cabinet pick for Joe Biden. Additionally, Wu would be the first person who isn't a white male to become Mayor. I think she has a pretty good shot at winning even if Walsh runs for reelection, but if he doesn't, she's a shoo-in.

I'm afraid I have no idea whom either of these two individuals are, or why this news is so profound.

I am quite interested in Asian American politics, therefore I know Michelle. Although I disagree with her on a lot of issues and would probably not vote for her, I think she's likeable and deserves to be successful.

Because Boston has had a pretty racist history, and so a non-white (and non-male) mayor would be a pretty big step for the city.

Boston's reputation is "America's most racist city", a designation for which there is no shortage of competition

There's no doubt that Boston is racist, as the entire country is rooted in racism. I just don't think it's especially racist compared to other cities. I might say that it is about equivalent with dozens of other cities as the most racist, though.

I don't disagree. I grew up in the Boston area until I was 18, and I don't think of it as more racist than other cities I've been to / learned about, but it has its own brand of racism (hate using this phrase) that's not quite like anywhere else. Kind of like how Manhattan racism is different than Queens racism in NYC.
