NV Debate: Early Thoughts

Recommended Posts

Bloomberg does not seem prepared even for questions he should have been prepared to respond to.

Klobuchar seems low energy.

Buttigieg is polished, but surprisingly seems background for someone that was a winner of IA and a good second in NH.

Biden seems the most awake and coherent of any of the debates he's had.

Warren is winning the debate. She's a killer. I kind of wish she would debate Trump. However, the coward in the White House likely would refused to debate her, making up some sort of excuse.

Sanders might be another winner. Some might not agree with him, but he's on fire. His face is also red.

Best debate of the campaign.

I didnt put that under my name. Are you watching this debate stoned or something? The leader is an 80 year socialist who still hasnt explained how he will pay for his healthcare plan, Bloomberg has been a disaster,  and Klob just showed her terrible temper on the stage.

Theres a reason why Trump despite being impeached is still competitive in most of the swing states. This is a weak crop of candidates.

If this is a weak crop of candidates, who would you have considered strong candidates for the democratic nomination?

Not sure there is any although Sherrod Brown might have been a perfect mix between a leftist like Bernie/Warren and a moderate like Biden.

If you don't see any good contender among the 20+ Democrats who ran, there is some implicit bias. It's the most experienced and most varied field in one history. There are several good candidates.

Yeah the field is so great the leader is an 80 year old socialist and the other is an 80 year former Republican NYC mayor.

Mind you, the current sitting President, the platform he ran on, and the style of campaigning he did, in 2016, would have been utterly unelectable in 2000. He wasn't elected because he was a "quality candidate," or was better than anyone else in the 2016 GOP Primary, or was better than Clinton (both were lying, corrupt, sleazy monsters) - the zeitgeist, the media (which, ironically he's been vilifying), and the degeneration of the American political discourse are why he was elected. As a candidate and a President, he's one of the worst in U.S. history (though not THE worst).

I could not BELIEVE that Bloomberg's defense to all the women who have alleged extremely serious incidents of sexual harassment in the workplace was "They didn't like a joke."

I mean, holy FUCK.

Wrong room, buddy.  The Republican debate is next door over.

If Bloomberg had suddenly erupted into flames, it would not be the worst thing that happened to him tonight.

Completely agreed. I just don't think it will stick with those who support him.

Predictably MSNBC hasnt jumped down his throat over this. His performance tonight should have ended his campaign.

I've only seen clips from the debate, but this is what happens when you decide to jump into a race after your opponents have been doing this for 8 months.

My hope for the Democratic party is that this is the beginning of the end for Bloomberg's candidacy.

In retrospect, I'm wondering if @Actinguy's theory is right - opposite to what many were speculating, the DNC altered their rules for the debate to allow Bloomberg *in order to subject him to scrutiny* and therefore stress-test someone who very well could be the nominee while avoiding that kind of scrutiny. If so, smart on their part.

Yeah -- he did not look like a man who was itching to get on a debate stage.  He could afford the greatest debate prep in the world, and the very best they could come up with was "All the women who have accused me of INSANE levels of sexual harassment in the workplace just don't like my jokes."

I honestly think Bloomberg will cut his losses and drop out of the race immediately.  If he has any sense at all,  he has to know that it's over.

Ya, we'll see what kind of movement there is in the polls ... but those exchanges with Warren were brutal.

I wonder if Warren will play this cycle the role Chris Christie played in the last, whose most significant action in the campaign was torpedoing the main opponent to Trump (Rubio) at a key time. This time, though, it would be the main opponent to Sanders. Hmmm ...

I've seen people die before, but tonight was the first time I ever witnessed a murder.
