1892 Election

Debate on which party is the cause for a rebounding economy is a central focus on this debate. Conservatives are still dogged by Carpenter's foreign policy blunder, but his supports insist he is the reason for the growing economy. Atkinson is seen as having done a solid job, but his nationalization of industries has been criticized by some. The Progress Party is likely to win the West, but they could pick up votes from people unhappy with the two larger parties. Conservatives must show a strong performance in Round 1, since the Progress Party voters are more likely to support the Liberal Party in Round 2, over monetary policy.

General Election Round 1

Carpenter/McEnroe (Cons)  178 EV 40% PV [TX, LA, MO, MD, DE, NY, CT, RI, MI, KY, IN, WV, NJ, OH]

Atkinson/Bunt (Lib) 162 EV 40% PV [ME, VT, NH, MA, PA, WI, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL, TN, AL, MS, AR]

Barker/Inning (Pro) 104 EV 20% PV [The rest of the 1892 states]

[Good showing by the Conservatives, allowing them a good shot at winning in Round 2, despite much of the West expected to go to the LIberal Party. ]

General Election Round 2

Atkinson/Bunt (Lib) 235 EV 52% PV [Loses PA to the Conservatives; Gains NY and CT from the Conservatives. All Progress states not mentioned as having been won by Conservatives.]

Carpenter/McEnroe (Cons)  209 EV 48% PV [Loses NY and CT to Liberal Party; Gains PA from Liberal Party. Gains CA, WA, OR, IL from Progress.]

[The flipping of NY was unexpected (only 33% chance), but it occurred, and was the primary reason that Atkinson was reelected.]

Atkinson is reelected, but Congressional support has decreased! Conservatives are the larger party in both houses of Congress, but they do not have a majority. The Speaker is a very moderate Conservative, who is pro-Western. That is, a rare Conservative that is not a hardliner on the Gold Standard issue.

Congress

Liberal Senators 35%; US Reps 35%

Conservative Senators 40%; US Reps 45%

American Progress Senators 25%; US Reps 20%

President Carpenter retires from politics and as De Facto Party Leader; widely seen as replaced by U.S. Speaker John Rodger of Texas; soft on Gold and malliable to Western issues but still takes a rather hardline on Business and Fiscal issues regarding government control and overreach.

President Atkinson thanks his supporters in a speech and calls for unity in the States. He declares that the hardest times are behind us, with our economy looking up and our foreign policy sound, he argues that we have the best times ahead of us. He thanks President Carpenter for his years of service and his dutiful obligation to the Constitution. He promises to work with all parties in Congress, not just his own in passing legislation.

Behind the scenes, Atkinson is dismayed at the loss of seats in the Senate, but hopes to work with Progress and moderate Conservatives on crafting common-sense and bipartisan legislation. As he is now 68, it is unlikely he will run for any further terms.

Events and Decisions for March 1893-1897 for Pres. Atkinson @Hestia11

1) Cuba and Hawaii

The invasion of Hawaii was mostly effortless. The Spanish are unable to to reinforce Cuba as they are deep in a war in Europe. However, the Spanish soldiers in Cuba put up a good fight. Our first landing is blundered, causing some embarrassment to our government. We land on Cuba on the second attempt, and after a couple major battles we are able to capture Havana. Most of the population will not help the Spanish army, who are compelled to surrender after a few months. We can hold this island as a bargaining chip after the European War.

2) Socialists, Communists, Fascism, and in the US

France and Italy have overthrown their German occupiers, and the resulting government is split between Communists and Socialists who are fighting it out among themselves. Communism, Socialism, and a new nationalistic Fascism have been growing in Europe. We fear that these three different forms of government ideology will grow in our own country, especially as refugees arrive.

3) European Peace Conference

The Germans failed in their attempt at invading Great Britain, then they lost France to the French, and Italy to the Italians. Russia has pulled out of the German Alliance. As such the two competing alliances request a 3rd party mediate the peace discussions. We could volunteer to do this. Where should it be held?

4) Tariffs

Your economists are calling for a steep rise in tariffs to grow our industry as our economy improves. This will upset our Free Trade Agreements if we do this, but it might be worth the trade off.

5) Stockmarket Crash

The Stock Market has crashed amid speculation of our economy completely recovering. Our treasury departments are depleting. A week after the crash, unemployment skyrocketed, and now the unemployed are camped outside the White House. The wealthiest man in America, banker Rockefeller Carnegie Rothschild von Vanderbilt offers to bailout our government at his own expense if the government agrees to denationalize all industries and appoint him as President of the Bank of the United States.

6) Utah becomes a state

Nothing really to respond to, but this is a good sign for the Progress Party.

7) White Southerners once again petition for Affirmative Action

Former Confederates and their descendants, a minority in the South, claim that they are not getting equal opportunity at jobs or in education. The Liberal Party members in the South adamantly oppose such an anti-discrimination policy fearing that the whites will just take over the governments and re-enslave them. Some have even told the whites to leave the states if they don't like it.

😎 Western Silver Voters

The period of debt forebearance, signed by Pres. Carpenter, has passed for Western Farmers. The economy having never fully rebounded did not allow farmers to save to pay off their debts. As such, poor Western farmers are marching for an inflationary Silver Standard again, which they believe will help them pay back their debts. Some are calling for the government to absolve all debts. Economists and bankers are arguing for the Gold Standard and the resumption of payment on debts. Some are calling for an extension of the forbearance period, but the banks state that those owed loans have already waiting 10 years without receiving a cent. Most Progress Party voters favor the Silver Standard, or bimetalism. Most Liberal Party members favor gold or bimetalism. The Conservatives favor a gold standard.

1) We are overjoyed that the invasions went well. We thank the sailors and soldiers that risked their lives to make this possible. It will only strengthen our standing here in the Americas.

2) Refugees are refugees. They are fleeing from these types of people. We believe that this flow will slow to a stop once the war negotiations are complete, so there is no real reason to act on this at this point in time.

3) Naturally, the United States will volunteer to hold these negotiations. We float Boston, New York, or Philadelphia as natural places for a peace conference to be held. As it is in my second term, I would also be willing to travel if the needs are great enough.

4) We cannot put tariffs on our free trading partners. Even if we did, it's not for certain that it would be good enough to put our economy over the top. Raise tariffs only on European countries for now.

5) We will not be held hostage. Even Conservatives should detest this man. You cannot demand what the Congress and the President does. We will harshly reject his terms and go about dealing with this crisis. Denationalization is a polarizing issue. Tariffs on Europe will be used to help pay for it, as well as we should encourage our free trade agreement friends to increase trade with the US, with reduced prices to encourage them to trade more with us than anyone else. The wealthy do not hold us captive in the White House.

6) Okay :)

7) We will not agree to their demands. They have got their right to vote, and they can vote for whom they want.

8 )The President will advocate for a 4 year extension period, to be done on the next election day. We also will implement bimetallism, with a heightened silver to gold ratio. We, after all, can't force the banks to do this, but this is the Administration policy.

The two alliances opt for New York for the Peace Conference. Germany and Great Britain will lead their respective alliances. They know that they will accept the following for sure: Reduced navies, reduced armies, war damage compensation paid by Germany, a guaranteed 20 year-peace. Great Britain will lower tariff on Germany. What they cannot agree in, and which you will need to arbitrate, is the handling of France and Italy, the former was taken over by Communists, and the latter by Socialists. Monarchists have fled to the US and Great Britain. Napoleon IV, at the conference, demands that no one recognize the new French or Italian government, and that some peaceful way of restoring the status quo can be found with the help of America.

A bill to raise the Tariff against Europe in order to grow our industry is up for a vote. It has been decided to raise the tariff on Europe rather than on the new Free Trade partners. This bill needs a vote by @Kingthero and @Reagan04 since they are party leaders. (Also see the  bill below for a vote)

While this was probably a good move to avoid a bad precedence, the people's approval rating for the president plummets as most voters believed that this was an easy way to end the depression, even though there was no proof it would have helped or not. The people will accept the easy way, regardless of method, in troubling times.

American Progress Vote

We do not support raising the tariff on Europe; if we raise the tariff, then recovering economies in Europe will not buy from us period, as Great Britain has lowered their tariff.

Of course we will support bi-metalism efforts. Our farmers need to finally have their voice heard.

The extension period shall be voted on as well, as long as an amendment that the Government will be forced to debate another extension after the four years are up to ensure that the farmers are in a capable enough State to pay off their loans.

Lewis Barker Rallied in Illinois after the Stock Market Crash

While we are happy that efforts to help our farmers, along with our successes in foreign affairs thanks to our multi-partisan acknowledgement of American prosperity, I can not personally stand how these Establishment Governments have continuously dropped the economy into multiple depressions.

Every campaign, I have made it known that there are many ways to help build the economy. Sadly, little to none of what I have said has been heard in Government.

It is time for a change.

We have always stood with Westerners, but we have also stood for the best interests of the American People. Nobody will ever get everything they want, but if every American citizen can live in a country where they feel they are united among their neighbors, than that is a victory.

We shocked many as we continuously got on ballots across the Nation, and I firmly believe that it is time for a President to try strategies that haven't failed before.

President Henry managed a great economy, and kept Americans together in a time of turmoil. The American Progress Party led that effort. Our party has never failed the American People, and it is time to vote Progress for true American Progress.

1) The Socialist government is easier to stomach than a Communist government. We propose talks with the Italian Socialists to let the royals return peacefully. America will attempt to arbitrate with the French, but we acknowledge the difficulty of the task. Advocate free elections in France and in Italy to decide it. American expats will make sure that the results are free and fair.

2) If both parties deny the bill, we are forced to go to desperate measures. There is no counter option than raising other tariffs on some of our closest newest allies. Blame the parties if they decline for turning their back on a new world.

3) We are forced to at least talk with the man. We cannot accept all denationalized industries, as that is a non-starter. If we think he can give what he says he can give, and says he will compromise, then maybe we can come to an agreement, but otherwise, we will not.

Conservative Party Vote

The Conservatives oppose raising Tariffs as we are the Party of Free Trade and Laissex-Faire government to inspire economic growth, Tariffs will only plunge our economy into depression, this is the way of this Big Government and failed administration. We must return to the time when President Carpenter steered us to recovery, not the stale promises of government by the Liberal Party ruling and dictating the economy and the people.

We do officially support the gold standard and we will continue to oppose bimetallism, however, the Speaker being a sympathetic Texan, convinces Conservative orthodoxy to support forbearances, though this forbearance starting next election day is not lost on the Conservative Party as a political ploy being pulled by the Liberals and they do call out that blatant scheming.

Again, we stress that this depressive economic state cannot be solved by more government control, only through the Free Market can we achieve economic hegemony.

The Tariff bill fails, which causes the Northeastern industries and workers some chagrin.

The Forebearance nearly passes, but following the Conservative Leaders words about it being a political ploy, many of his members opt not to follow their leader and vote against the bill, narrowly causing it to fail.

A new bimetalism bill barely passes, despite Conservative opposition

The richest man in America will compromise only by allowing railroads to be nationalized, but will not bailout the country unless all other industries are denationalized. He also requires being made President of the Bank. He also opposes the forebearance, but that bill failed anyway. He, unlike many Conservative Party members, supports a high tariff on Europe, but that bill failed.

The European leaders state that these usurpers can in no way expect to relinquish power, and an election will not return the monarchy. They tell the president that Europe is traditionally a monarchy and not a Republic or Democracy, as such the monarchies must be returned. They ask for the US to support a non-recognition of these government, make a public statement referring to them as an illegal government, and use economic and other means to thwart these governments. In exchange, the leaders will compel Spain to relinquish Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the US. Lastly, the US must proclaim the Treaty of New York as a historic success.

Launch into an attack on the other two parties, saying that this would've benefitted our economy greatly.

We demand that education be kept nationalized, as a new university is already being built. We demand that there is railroads and shipping kept nationalized as well as education, and the others may stop.

The US will only come to a compromise, but express disappointment behind closed doors at Europe's unwillingness to change. We only wish Cuba and the Philippines, but we cannot use economic means to thwart this government. We will not recognize these new governments, and issue a statement that they are not the true representation of France and Italy.

It's his fault for refusing to compromise other than only one thing whereas we have to give 9. Keep working on our own efforts, then.

State of the Union for Election of 1896

----------------------------------------------------------------------

National Strength: We rank behind Russia, Great Britain, Germany,  France, Italy, Japan, and Mexico.  The recent war sees Russia as the strongest country. All countries on this list are not far ahead of us. The European War leveled the playing field.

Military Strength: Our professional army is 120,000 men and 58 ships. We are building a naval base in Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Panama.

Foreign Affairs: We are improving relations with Europe. Our relations with the 3rd World may be better at the moment. The European Powers are glad that we refuse to recognize Communist France and Socialist Italy.

Military: Our military is currently defending against any potential Indian attacks.

Economy: Our economy sunk from a recession back to a depression last term, but it should be back to a recession any month now. We have not had a strong economy in almost half a century.

Trade: Trade is improving with agreements in the 3rd world and with relations improving with Great Britain and France.

Budget: Our budget is restricted because of a low tariff, lower taxes and high government spending, especially on the military.

Social Harmony: Social harmony is more or less good, except for Western farmers.

Immigration: Immigration is increasing with all sorts of European refugees. We don’t have enough jobs for everyone. Chinese immigrants in the West are also increasing.

Mood of the people: The people seem happier but they are still disgruntled about the economy.

Popularity of the Incumbent: the incumbent is respected, but reelection will be difficult.

Party Power: Conservatives are the largest party, but they do not have a majority.

The next election is likely to be a complete tossup.

Name and office: Senator Lewis Barker

State of residence: California

VP nominee: Congressperson Harper Inning of Illinois

Platform (see State of the Union above):

"As I have previously rallied, it is time to return to our strong economy that the last Progress President, President Henry, oversaw. These post civil war politicians have continuously failed our economy, and finally more and more people are responding to our message. We almost have ballot access everywhere, if not already, and it is time that we have a President that will bring new ideas to the office."

National Strength:

The fact that recent studies have shown our neighbor of Mexico ranks above us is truly scary. Why have we sunk from the time of being 3# in the world with President Henry all the way down to below a country that we beat in war, let me remind you it was a war started under the successful Henry administration? We need to grow our country economically back to being the strongest nation in our hemisphere.

WE ARE NO LONGER THE STRONGEST NATION ON THE AMERICAN CONTINENT!

Military Strength:

We should slightly reduce our ground troops, however we should also create a reserves system so that people who want to solely defend our country can be called in the time of war with the sole goal of defending their country.

Foreign Affairs:

European conflict and our reactions to it have been embarrassing, however we must move on and make sure that we strike the deals needed to best propel our nation forward. We should continue to strive for our relations with Asia and South America, as Mexico poses a threat to our influence.

Military:

We do not need 120,000 troops to defend against Indians. That is a waste of troops. Creating a reserve system, while slightly lowering our standing army, should make it much more efficient to deal with our internal disputes.

Economy:

No administration seems to be able to fix the economy, and it is time to change that. The American Progress Party shall lead the people to actual economic recovery, recovery that will not be harmed by the shady politics seen by the establishment in Washington.

Trade:

Thanks to the great work of our politicians, we have not jeopardized our Trade further with Europe. This means we can recover European trade with thriving American businesses exporting products, along with our current efforts to increase trade among other trade partners from all around the world.

Budget:

We have laid out plans in our platform to lower the budget, and luckily economic recovery under our administration would later aid those budget cuts in order to pay off our debt, help out the American People forgotten by the past administrations, and help re-institute American dominance on the continent.

Social Harmony:

It is a shame that Westerners have continuously been denied a voice; luckily, thanks to our hard work, we at least got some things done for them. Under my administration, westerners should recover towards the same level as everyone else.

However, we do also note that we can't only hear from the Westerners. This is why we continue to propose our message of COMPLETE American Unity, something that we have worked for and succeeded with in the past.

We are the only party that is not new to politics, and we have been consistently showing the People that we offer the solutions needed to bring every American together in relative harmony.

Immigration:

Immigration is not the issue why we don't have jobs; the economy is. If we blocked immigration, and our economy recovered, we would lose valuable assets that would lead to American economic growth.

Mood of the people:

We are still the Party of unity, and we have not been harmonious as a complete group since we have been stable economically.

Popularity of the Incumbent:

The incumbent not running is a grand opportunity for the American Progress Party to continue to grow numbers. We have shown that we are electable in more than just the West, and it is time to drop stigmas that we are a wasted vote. We are not a third party; we are THE THIRD PARTY!

Party Power:

We have been consistently growing, and one day our growth will lead to an executive win.
