Attempt to negotiate an agreement between the workers and the railroad bosses.

The bosses fire the railway workers before you are able to negotiate. While this cripples their business for a week and stops goods for a week, crippling other businesses for a week as well, they are easily able to find replacements among the unemployed; however, these people are untrained. The recently fired workers protest and labor organizations and leaders are becoming increasingly vocal.

We'll raise the tax on alcohol and implement a stamp tax to pay or this subsidy.

The taxation will be put to good use; however, years of high taxation, especially during a depression, is causing an increase in grumbling in some sectors. Prohibitions are somewhat happy with your taxation, but they still don't think it goes far enough.

John Wesley Publicly Denounces the President

"I can simply not believe this tragedy. This man, the President, has gone against the wishes of many people of his own party. Everybody west of the Mississppi and everybody who resides in former Confederate states are now abandoned in the face of the Industrial Giants of the North.

There are so many of these people saying they are pro-labor, but isn't farming labor? Isn't mining labor? Isn't railroad work labor?

Greenbacks are what will lead this country to stability. A universal currency, one that is defined by the goods and services we produce and trade as a nation.

The President has officially abandoned everyone outside of the business-minded Northeast.

I call all western, southern, and midwestern people to think about the Liberty Party and how they have ignored and exploited the American People.

It is time to bound together and create a nation that truly is united and works for every single American.

The American Progress Party has always stood for these values, and it is time that the People be well aware of h ow awful they have been exploited in the last two decades."

Meet with the labor leaders and hear their demands, reprimand the bosses for violating their workers right to organize peacefully.

Reach out to Italy and Austria to counter these alliances.

They wish: 1) the right to organize into a trade union (prohibited by the company). 2) Better work conditions, such as an 8-hour work week, 3) end of child labor, 4) higher wages, 5) the ability to take off work to treat an injury or illness without the fear of losing a job. All of these were denied by the railroad companies. No major company offers any of these benefits. The Liberty Party establishment, being more pro-business, is mostly opposed to attempts to deal with these at a national level.

Italy is too friendly with Great Britain at the moment to consider an offer. Austria would consider such an alliance, but needs an incentive.

I'll happily meet these demands as best I can.

Offer to lower their tariff if they agree to an alliance.

You have to be specific in how you plan on doing this. Congress, which is still majority Liberty Party will not except federal legislation meet these demands. You'll have to invent another route as president.

The Democratic Party worries about the speed in which alliances are sought by world powers. This dangerous bloc building is aiming to prepare the countries for a great war. We should not engage in any European conflicts and stay out of any military pacts if they are offered. American blood will not cover European battlefields. Especially when our problems at home are not fixed.

1) This is a first amendment issue, and the company is acting in a manner that impedes the right for people to peacefully organize. 2, and 3) Issue executive orders to end child labor and create an eight hour work week. 4) Give tax breaks to companies that agree to raise workers wages. 5) Encourage states to establish a system of old-age benefits for workers, benefits for victims of industrial accidents, unemployment insurance, aid for dependent mothers and children, the blind, and the physically handicapped, until national politics provide for the ability to enact such a system on the national level.

Your advisers inform you that the executive order only effects the Federal Government jobs. A bill must be passed to affect all national jobs. You would have to nationalize the railroad industry, and then you could do it. If you nationalize all industry, then you can do it for all jobs. Part four would have to go through Congress.

Spain will listen to offers from the US-Russia-Germany-Austria alliance. China has no interest in an alliance. Netherlands leans towards Great Britain and France, and will join their alliance if Spain joins the German-led alliance.

Nationalize the railroad industry as an "Area of industry of grave importance to the United States, or her peoples".

The Democratic Party decries this decision as a violation of the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution and an egregious offense against the Small Government model of the United States.

Pres. Brooke nationalizes the railroads. The Supreme Court immediately takes up the case, as the move is challenged. Fortunately for Brooke, the court is mostly Liberty Party judges, and the move is upheld 5-4.

In other news, Germany convinces Spain to join the alliance. Netherlands joins the British alliance.

I will now post the State of the Union to set up the next election.

State of the Union for Election of 1880

----------------------------------------------------------------------

National Strength: We rank behind Great Britain, France, and Germany in national production. We have sunk to a tie in 4th place with Russia.

Military Strength: Our professional army is 80,000 men and 48 ships.

Foreign Affairs: We are part of the German Alliance, which is becoming increasingly at odds with the British Alliance. War seems more likely each year.

Military: Our military is used in governing the South and in Indian Wars in the territories

Economy: Our economy still has not recovered from an Economic Panic. We are still in a depression.

Trade: Because of our alliance, tariffs are low for our allies, but they have been risen on our enemies. Trade with Britain and France has mostly ceased. We are not trading as much as would be ideal.

Budget: We have a sizable budget. We are spending as much as we collect. The national debt is untouched.

Social Harmony: Harmony is not good, but not as bad as pre-Civil War levels.

Immigration: Immigration has slowed. White Southerners are leaving our country.

Mood of the people: The people are as depressed as the economy. They fear a war in Europe.

Popularity of the Incumbent: Pres. Brooke is powerful enough to get reelected, but his popularity has taken a hit with our worst and longest depression and the fear of a war. Labor is increasing their support of him as he nationalized the railroads.

Party Power: The Liberty Party still have the majority of the governorships, Senators and US Reps. However, opposition parties have increased to equal the Liberty when counted as one group. The opposition parties are still more regional than national, which makes it easier for the Liberty Party to do better in presidential elections. Some hope one of these three parties will be come the major opposition party.

Name and office:

Resident State:

Party:

Platform (see the State of the Union above):

Sen. Randolph Yedver (D-WV) announces his final run for President; begins grooming Sen. Jacque Toulemont (D-LA) as his successor in the Southern Democrats

National Strength: I worry of quick industrialization and call on our party and nation to support a remembrance of agriculture and the strong breadbasket which our nation is. We are allowing the South and Midwest to be forgotten as we centralize around the north, I wish to be a President for all people. Our entangling alliances are worriesome.

Foreign Affairs: Our economy is in shambles thanks to the Big Government policies of this President, now he attempts to tie us to Europe, the tinderbox of the world that will assuredly bring us into international war, we cannot allow alliances to be created, but rather cultivate friendly but strictly neutral partnerships across the continent. This has gotten far worse as the President further expands the government and that includes tieing closer to Europe making war inevitable. We must stop this madness!

Economy: What we need right now is for the government to withdraw from many sectors of private life. Taxes and tariffs are far too high and are crushing large portions of the population under their weight. Not only this, but the President has bloated the government once more by unconstutionally seizing the railroads, this is monstrosity!

Trade: As I said in Foreign Affairs, Trade is wonderful and when we allow ourselves to compromise it by picking sides in Europe, we lose the American Neutrality that has allowed us to be successful in the past, like with all things, the government should employ a light touch.

Budget: Our budget needs to be greatly slashed, this large Federal Government model is never what the Founders intended and is frankly disgusting. The level at which our government is now involved in economic contracts is greatly worriesome.

Social Harmony: The fact that we have allowed the disenfranchisement of people that were only trying to defend their own land against people they were told were invaders by the real villains at the top is shameful and I cannot stand for it.

Immigration: Immigration needs to be restricted once more to allow real Americans to take the jobs. Southerners shouldn't feel their aliens in their own homeland.

Mood of the People: I sympathize with those terrified of war and economic depression. This is exactly what the President has wrought upon this nation and we cannot stand for it any longer.

Incumbent: President Brooke has been a terrible President for his large government programs and now that he is running to extend his time in office to 24 years and after his terrible stripping of rights at his so-called "Constitutional Convention" it is apparent he is a dictator plain and simple, we must oppose this horrible man that has forgotten every virtue of our founding at once. Now we have added the unconstitutional theft of the railroads by the government with exploding debts and deficits as well as the near certainty of costly European war! The Founding Fathers must be roling over in their graves at the thought of this horrendous man.

Party Power: The Democratic Party is the party for Conservative Men and Women that believe in this Nation's founding. We believe in Small, Limited Government and Conservative Moral and Traditional values. We wish to give a voice to the voiceless and downtrodden under the corrupt authoritarian regime of the Brooke administration.

Final run!

National Strength: Continue to work here. This generation must work very hard in order to provide a better future for the coming generation.

Military Strength: We are fine here, but make sure to use those forces just for defending. Currently nation building is inconceivable since we lack a stable condition at home. Rebuild our nation first.

Foreign Affairs: The Democratic Party is skeptical on alliances. For economical purposes is it could profitable but beware of getting into European conflicts. Our forefathers have fought for independence from Europe and we should not make any mistakes here. The Liberty Party seems to be ready to take arms up and if you do not want American blood covering European battlefields vote Democratic! The Liberty establishment will not fight the war. The war will be fought by hard-working laborers and farmers, who were ignored by the Liberty Party for decades, but when it comes to fighting they will certainly call you.

Military: If our leadership would finally be able to solve those crisis we could reduce the resources needed for governing the South. But they brandishing  their swords towards Europe and ignore American interests. Additionally let us finish the Indian Wars on an expansionist stance once and for all.

Economy: Keep trying to get our economy booming again, but make sure that laborers and farmers are treated in a respectful manner. Implement work safety standards and make sure that people get their money as promised. This will also help us to sustain a harmonious atmosphere among our people. Let women, black people and immigrants not suffer from poor working conditions and do not exclude them from the jobs they want to obtain. Only happy workers will produce worthy goods, so the Democratic Party will watch on your interests.

Trade: We are not Queen Victoria's or any other monarch's servants. We have to look on our people first. Our laborers, farmers and workers are left behind, while we protect European interests.

Budget: The Democratic Party stands for low taxes.

Social Harmony: Women and black people were granted many rights and we do not oppose this. But the Democratic Party believes that those rights are not executed fully. If you vote Democratic no one will be left behind. We might have the reputation to be a one-issue Southern interests party, but that is not true. As President I will look on all Americans and I will be a true president of all Americans. A thing we did not experience since decades.

Immigration: Our priority as Americans should not be to get more immigrants first, but to create a good social environment that Americans do not leave our soil again. However, we have to make sure that immigrants are treated fairly and not lynched like in California. We need to implement and execute our laws finally to end injustice. That does not just apply to immigrants, but for women, the working class and black people as well. Our current administration is very lenient here and they do nothing to prevent true Americans from leaving our wonderful nation. What a disgrace!

Mood of the people: The Liberty Party labels itself as tolerant and liberal but is excluding a whole group of Americans from fulfilling their duty. To participate in elections. We live in a country where people are taken away their rights just in order to maintain electoral success. As the Democratic Party does not simply represent Southern interests we are also extremely worried that one day other groups of people are taken away those rights easily as well. Many years ago no one would have believed that this is possible, but now we do see it with our own eyes. What if one day the black community becomes more and more upset with the Liberty Party? What if the working class and laborers become unhappy with our government and demand certain rights? What if women stand up for the execution of their promised rights? Will those groups also be prohibited from voting, if the Liberty Party is likely to lose everything? I believe that electing someone could give that country a positive push into the right direction. Let us try this experiment together and let us call for an amendment which prohibits collective punishment under the constitution.

Popularity of the Incumbent: It seems that we are electing our own emperor. Do not underestimate the Brooke fatigue, people waking already up. Although I think it is great that he broke several times with the even more leftist establishment, I strongly believe it is time for the Americans to unite under a fresh leader. The Democratic Party offers to serve all Americans, rich and poor, white and black, women and men from the South and North and West alike. Let us rebuild our country and unite under a new leadership.

Party Power: As already said the Democratic Party believes that the whole congress is more likely to serve our elected majesty instead of the American people. Especially their electorate they had promised to work for. Women, blacks and laborers were granted many rights in order to bind them to the Liberty Party but at the end of the day America is developing backwards into a one-party state with an elected emperor. People's interests will get and more and more unimportant to the ruling class and we will get into a war soon. Look at all those unnecessary alliances we and other power-hungry leaders are building up. The Democratic Party offers to all people who are not ignoring those facts and extremely worried on this situation as well an alternative. Thank you and God bless you all.

If offered I serve as VP.

Democrats will support any party if there will be a run-off election.

Military Strength: This is fine.

Foreign Affairs: Grow this alliance to counter the British and French

Military: Begin pulling troops out of the south as they seem to be in-line

Economy: Give the american workers a new-deal of programs, public-work projects, reforms, and regulations to bring us out of this recession.

Trade: Look to Asia, Africa, and South America to make up the trade difference due to the lack of trade from Britain, and France.

Social Harmony: Harmony is going up this shows that Liberty leadership is working.

Immigration: This is fine.

Popularity of the Incumbent: I've been president for so long because the american people want me to be president, and I'll continue to rule in their best interests.

Name and office: Senator John Wesley

Resident State: New York

Party: American Progress

Platform (see the State of the Union above):

National Strength: Other parties are fearful of military alliances, but how do you think we are ever going to further our interests in the Western hemisphere? A great power will not invade us with western hemisphere affairs if they'd have to worry about european powers.

Military Strength: Increase the navy further!

Foreign Affairs: We need to create a plan for our side of the world. Possibly create a protecting sphere over our southern neighbors.

Military: Finally push the remaining Indian Wars to victory, something that hasn't been done in over two decades.

Economy: Create war industries to send arms to our German alliance allies.

Trade: It'll be their fault if they starve; American products shall go to those that buy them reasonably.

Budget: Yet again, find ways to lower the budget, but keep it steady until then.

Social Harmony: We need a party in charge that will stop being vague and unclear to the American People.

Immigration: We need to address immigration, as many immigrants will join us in fear of a European war.

Mood of the people: We need unity, a value the APP has always delivered on.

Popularity of the Incumbent: Continuously garner an ever expanding number of States who disapprove of the President, as our Party stands for Westerners, farmers, southerners, midwesterners, and those that are disadvantaged by the current administration.

Party Power: Continue our strong growth pattern to finally be able to break into a second round.

General Election 1880

Brooke's party is so entrenched that his reelection is more likely than not; however, he is vulnerable for the first time as voters begin to look elsewhere. At the Progress Party Convention, Wesley defeats Gregory in the first round. Gregory is named the VP nominee for his strong effort. The Democratic Convention was a close affair, but Yedver tops Lawson this election.

Round 1

Brooke/Bunt (Lib) 167 EV 45% PV (All 1880 states, except those below)

Alexander/Pope (Rep) 116 EV 30% PV (NY, PA, NJ, OH, IL)

Wesley/Gregory (Pro) 54 EV 15% PV (CA, OR, NV, NE, CO, KS, IA, MO, MN)

Yedver/Lawson (Dem) 32 EV 10% PV (MD, DE, WV, TX, LA)

[There were no real surprises in round one, except perhaps American Progress taking MN. We have a second round for the first time in ages. Liberty Party faces the New Republicans.]

Round 2

Brooke/Bunt (Lib) 214 EV 54% PV [NV, MO, AR, LA, MS, AL, KY, TN, GA, FL, SC, NC, VA, MN, IA, WI, IN, MD, DE, WV, RI, CT, MA, VT, NH, ME]

Alexander/Pope (Rep) 155 EV 46% PV [CA, OR, KS, NE, CO, TX, IL, MI, OH, NY, PA, NJ]

[The election wasn't as close as I expected. New England went solidly for the Liberty Party, even though the New Republicans had an equal shot in MA, CT, RI. Liberty Party also got lucky with wins in NV, WV, and IN. In the end, all regions were contestable, except for states with a majority African-American population, which were guaranteed Liberty Party votes.]

He says that Democrats and Progress members are worthy allies but simply won’t be able to win an election in the near future. There are calls within the party to swallow the two parties for now until a third force in government can re emerge later. Republicans are the strongest opposition and can lead it the best.
