A lot of polls actually had Bustamante leading by a few very late in the game. I'm going to tinker with the electoral college in this one some to make it a little less likely that the popular vote loser loses. In the case of this scenario, however, I think the presence of more than two candidates adds more uncertainty and increases the likelihood of what you encountered hillary.
