// Abortion

Abortion should be the undeniable right of all women in all circumstances.

At least in the first trimester abortion should be available to all women.

Abortion should only be a legal option in the cases of rape, incest or life and after counselling.

Abortion is wrong. Make unlawful abortions punishable by up to twelve years in prison.

Abortion is murder. Criminalize women travelling abroad for abortions.

@

//Agriculture

Promote collectivization of farms. Large subsidies and price controls on food. Expropriate agribusiness.

Support co-operatives and family farming through subsidies and price ceilings. Break up agribusinesses.

Support tax relief and incentives for farmers to promote exports. Reform current subsidy programs.

Promote private investment and greater efficiency in agriculture. Keep agribusiness subsidies.

Economic growth and efficiency comes first. Encourage agribusiness and large farms to maximize profits.

@

//Armed Forces

Keep the Army at its present size to protect the Revolution. Retain militia units on stand-by.

Bring Revolutionary Army under full civilian control. Significant funding for equipment modernization.

Support extra equipment spending, but aim to cut down on troop numbers.

Gradually shrink the size of the Revolutionary Army. Sell surplus equipment to help national finances.

Decommission all militia units, re-integrate skilled loyalist troops.

@

//Federalism

Support full autonomy for the minority-majority states and allow them the right to secession.

Devolve significant constitutional powers to states with majority-minority populations.

Seek to maintain the current balance of powers between the federal government and the states.

Protect a strong central government. Expand Presidential and federal authority over states.

Abolish all regional autonomy. Use military force to put down any regional rebellions.

@

//Old Regime

National Tribunals to hunt out counterrevolutionary beliefs.

Rid society and politics of regime officials and sympathisers.

Enact Truth and Reconciliation Commissions. Prosecute regime leaders.

Release all political prisoners. Pardon low-ranking officials.

National Party regime did some good things. Pardon all officials.

@

// Privatization

Support a large-scale nationalization programme to take over all private industries.

It was a mistake to privatize manufacturing, transport, and finance. Re-nationalize them.

Put a hold on privatization plans, but encourage competition in appropriate markets.

More competition in markets. Privatize Dmowska Airlines and Telecom through vouchers.

Completely privatize all remaining public companies! Sell off these assets to the private sector.

@

//Same-Sex Unions

Equality demands legalization of same-sex marriage. Gay rights are human rights.

More rights for gays and lesbians. Provide civil unions for same-sex couples.

Protect gays and lesbians from discrimination. Hold free votes on issue.

Marriage as between a man and a woman. Oppose Same-Sex Unions.

Gay adoption should be outlawed and bring back anti-Sodomy laws.

@

//Tax and Spend

Move towards Scandinavian-style taxes and a welfare state.

Targeted taxes on the wealthy. Deficits to finance social welfare.

Institute progressive but low taxes. Limited deficit spending.

Support a flat income tax. Avoid deficit spending at all costs.

Enact a value-added tax instead of an income tax. Zero deficit.

What are the main political divides in the country? Which parties like which other parties, who hates whom? What's the recent political history - any dictators or atrocities we should know about?

Here are some issues that you might include.

//Poverty

End poverty with widespread state ownership of the economy.

End poverty with land reform and wealth redistribution.

End poverty with family allowances and minimum wage laws.

End poverty with urban renewal and faith-based initiatives.

Poverty is best addressed by private charity.

@

//Inflation

Print money to finance state spending. Price controls on all goods.

First economic growth, then low inflation. Price controls on basic necessity goods.

Introduce a comprehensive incomes policy to reduce inflation in a fair way.

Introduce an inflation target and an independent central bank.

Zero-inflation target. Tough line on wage increases.

@

//Foreign debt

Renege on foreign debt. Mobilise domestic private savings instead.

Renegotiate foreign debt. Default if necessary.

Seek forgiveness for odious debt. No repayments on arms credit.

Repay current debt and keep future borrowing low.

Repay current debt and implement all IMF recommendations.

@

//Foreign policy

Anti-USA policy. Create new regional organisations to resist imperialism.

Moderately anti-USA policy. Promote independence in regional organisations.

Moderately pro-USA policy. No military support for American wars.

Pro-USA policy. Military support for American wars.

Strongly pro-USA policy. Allow Marines to attack drug dealers across our borders.

@

//Race relations

Fight discrimination. Recognise minorities' claim to land and wealth.

Introduce special measures like job quotas to promote minorities.

Help minority groups to exit poverty as equal members of our society.

Race relations are fine. No need for change.

Separate citizenship classes for different ethnic groups.

What are the main political divides in the country? Which parties like which other parties, who hates whom? What's the recent political history - any dictators or atrocities we should know about?

The major political divides are basically between the previously-privileged whites and the non-whites, as well as between the nation's elites (white collar workers, businessmen, financiers, and land owners) versus its majority (peasants, small farmers, industrial and mine workers). The nation was largely a backwater known for its natural resources and corruption. It was ruled by an absolute monarchy until 1918, when upheavals brought about by Micro WW1 put an end to the old order. The country then had a series of civil wars, revolutions and coups called the "Time of Troubles" for 21 years until a right-wing military dicatorship called the New State was established. This dictatorship lasted until 2005, when it was overthrown by a popular revolution with the approval of the ruling King (who had previously been reduced to that of a figurehead). A caretaker government appointed by the King then took over and elections have been scheduled for 2010. Right now the nation is beset by a troubled economy, social tensions, and insurgencies by both the remnants of the old regime's footsoldiers and black separatists/communists. The old regime was pretty atrocious, but some of the more radical factions of the Revolutionaries conducted a "red terror" of their own. The conflict has been particularly nasty in the black-majority southeast.

Here is a description of each party:

Social Democrats: A centrist, liberal party with cross-class support. Strong belief in technocratic policies and economic liberalization, with a corresponding commitment to "healing the social divide." The party enjoys good relations with the Workers Party, Greens, and New Democracy- but the Workers and New Democracy parties would both rather be in charge and view the party with suspicion.

Workers Party: A democratic socialist party with strong support among the urban and rural working classes, especially non-whites. Wants greater commitment to social justice along with a revolutionary purge of society of the Estado Novo regime. Its ties to Communist groups tends to make the other parties wary of it.

New Democracy: A conservative party, but committed to the Democratic process. Includes some former supporters of the New State regime, but prefers to distance itself from it. It enjoys support from rural landowners and urban elites, as well as the fast-growing Protestant churches. It is also the party most strongly committed to economic liberalization.

Greens: A centre-left party with support among both students and indigenous activists. Major priorities are environmentalism, anti-corruption, and peace. It's a likely coalition partner for either the PSD or the PT.

ARENA: A rebranding of the old regime into a right-wing nationalist party. Wants the old order back to varying degrees, and support is limited to rural conservative areas- but it could end up becoming kingmaker if the New Democracy party becomes the largest party.

In general Reunaio tends to be a pretty unstable, polarized society despite its growing economy (its growth has been high but extremely uneven) so the election should be pretty interesting to do. The parties are elected according to list seats and the Prime Minister is appointed by the King depending on which party/coalition performs the best.
