Patine
While I'm at it, I'd also suggest William Wirt and John Floyd as 'others,' both of whom won electoral votes in 1832.
Patine
Also, one more thing on this project, a question, actually. Will the 'others' be one big party with one candidate nominated, each be their own party, or be a big party with 'jungle primaries?'
Patine
Sorry for the run-on series of posts on this topic, but I'm still thinking on it. You may also want to include George Clinton as an 'other,' given he won electoral votes for president in 1808, despite being Madison's running mate. You could also make him a Democratic-Republican (his actual party of allegiance) as a primaries rival for Crawford.
mahaadoxyz
Also, one more thing on this project, a question, actually. Will the 'others' be one big party with one candidate nominated, each be their own party, or be a big party with 'jungle primaries?' The answer is that I haven't actually thought out how to arrange the "Others," and would appreciate feedback. I might consider cordoning off the "Southern Democrats," Breckinridge, Thurmond, and Wallace into their own party. Other than that, I'm not sure. I might use the jungle primary strategy for people like Perot etc., or I might have some sort of Left-Wing Third Party that incorporates the Socialists, the Progressives, the Greens (Nader) and nominates just one candidate. Patine
I'd do it this way: Democrats: Lewis Cass Stephen Douglas George McClellan Horatio Seymour Horace Greeley Samuel Tilden Winfield Hancock William Jennings Bryan Alton Parker James Cox John Davis Al Smith Adlai Stevenson Hubert Humphrey George McGovern Walter Mondale Michael Dukakis Al Gore John Kerry Republicans: John Fremont James Blaine Charles Evans Hughes Alf Landon Wendell Willkie Thomas Dewey Barry Goldwater Bob Dole John McCain Whigs: Henry Clay Daniel Webster Hugh White Willie Magnum Winfield Scott Democratic-Republicans: George Clinton William Crawford Federalists: Charles C. Pinckney DeWitt Clinton Rufus King Southern Democrats: John Floyd John Breckinridge Strom Thurmond George Wallace Left-Wing Third Party: Eugene Debs Robert LaFollette Henry Wallace Ralph Nader Other Third Parties (Each with their own party or 'jungle primaries'): William Wirt John Bell James Weaver John Anderson Ross Perot So much as you'd said, but with my suggestion on the Democratic-Republicans and Wirt and Floyd, and either Third Parties seperately for the rest or 'jungle primaries.' You could also include Weaver a a Left-Wing Third Party Candidate despite socially conservative elements in his party.
mahaadoxyz
I like it. Now the question: with these 51 candidates, do I bother making a demographic model of this election, or do I just do it by instinct?
Patine
I like it. Now the question: with these 51 candidates, do I bother making a demographic model of this election, or do I just do it by instinct? I'd do it by instinct, to get it out faster. A B-list scenario doesn't need to be quite as accurate as an A-list scenario, after all. If you do the five non-assigned Third Party candidates (Wirt, Bell, Weaver, Anderson, and Perot) as each their own party, you should use actual ballot party names (Anti-Masonic, Constitutional Union, Populist, Independent, and Reform, respectively) and have Wirt and Bell restricted historically as to where they're on the ballot. If you do them as a jungle primary, however, I'm at a loss for a concise unifying name, or for a shorter one than Left Wing Third Party for that bloc. mahaadoxyz
Progressive Party seems fine to me. And now that you mention it, ballot access does seem dispositive in terms of whether I should make the "others" their own party or not. I think I should, though it will make Wirt at least trivially unimportant. Now, which candidates should be On By Default? Democrats: Lewis Cass ON Stephen Douglas ON George McClellan OFF Horatio Seymour OFF Horace Greeley OFF Samuel Tilden ON Winfield Hancock OFF William Jennings Bryan ON Alton Parker OFF James Cox OFF John Davis ON Al Smith ON Adlai Stevenson ON Hubert Humphrey ON George McGovern ON Walter Mondale OFF Michael Dukakis OFF Al Gore ON John Kerry ON Republicans: John Fremont ON James Blaine ON Charles Evans Hughes ON Alf Landon ON Wendell Willkie OFF Thomas Dewey ON Barry Goldwater ON Bob Dole ON John McCain ON Whigs: Henry Clay ON Daniel Webster ON Hugh White OFF Willie Magnum OFF Winfield Scott OFF Democratic-Republicans: George Clinton ON William Crawford OFF Federalists: Charles C. Pinckney ON DeWitt Clinton ON Rufus King OFF Southern Democrats: John Floyd OFF John Breckinridge ON Strom Thurmond ON George Wallace ON Progressives: Eugene Debs ON Robert LaFollette ON Henry Wallace ON Ralph Nader ON James Weaver ON Anti-Masonic: William Wirt OFF Constitutional Union: John Bell OFF Independent: John Anderson OFF Reform: Ross Perot OFF Does that sound like a good list to people? I'd probably reverse Clinton and Crawford's status, as Crawford actively campaigned and got more EV's and had more party backing (two ex-presidents and the caucus endorsed him), despite his stroke (I'd just give him a low Stamina), whereas Clinton, though campaigning for his own ticket, largely got his EV's due to popularity in the New York legislature. However, Clinton may have been the stronger candidate if the two went head-to-head in a primary; hard to say. But that's something to consider. Otherwise, it looks great! mahaadoxyz
Oh, to anyone I've sent this to already: I've done a new apportionment adding in the 2010 census numbers, and the following states should have their EV's changed as follows: New York: 46, down from 48 Pennsylvania: 36, down from 40 California: 25, up from 24 Illinois: 23, down from 24 Texas: 20, up from 19 Virginia: 19, up from 18 Georgia: 14, up from 13 Kentucky: 13, down from 14 Alabama: 11, up from 10 Florida: 11, up from 10 South Carolina: 11, up from 10 Iowa: 9, down from 10 Washington: 7, up from 6 Maine: 6, down from 7 Oregon: 5, up from 4 Utah: 4, up from 3 In theory populations also ought to change a little bit, but I'm not sure those numbers are out yet and in any event it's much more work. jaminup93
I managed to win the nomination as Truman, getting Kennedy and LBJ to endorse me early on. I focused on the East Coast and let everyone else battle it out in the West, dividing up the delegates. I've found that this is the best strategy. As I focused on the later states, I had no competition. I chose LBJ as my VP. We'll see how the GE goes now!
jaminup93
Finished as Truman and won handily. It's a great scenario for the challenge of it. With Washington and Jefferson pulling votes on the East Coast, it makes for a challenging fight as either a Dem or GOPer
mahaadoxyz
Good to see Truman can end up with the nomination; I've typically tried it with more top-tier candidates like JFK/FDR. Who was the Republican in your race?
jaminup93
I faced Eisenhower/McCain. I didn't pay attention to the GOP primaries as much as the Dems, but the Dem primaries really swing back and forth as to who is in the lead. I think by the end the only major Democrat who hadn't been the front runner was Carter.

I've been dying for an all-star scenario ... the email address is os_davis@yahoo.com. I do have this. Do I need mahaadoxyz' permission to distribute it? By the way, I've also, with mahaadoxyz' permission, taken up the mantle of the B-List (those who ran, got significant performance, but still lost) scenario, based on the same scenario skeleton but with different candidates and some additional parties (full list on page 3 of this thread), and am working on it now if anyone's interested.
