Abe Lincoln

USA 1960

Recommended Posts

Ok I finally figured out how I could make a scenario without Campaigns Foreve (It's actually pretty easy, but taks a while) and I decided to make a 1960 Scenario. Here's what I got so far

Canidates

Democrats

1.Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts

2.Senate Majority Leader Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas

3.Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota

4.Former Governor Adlai Stevenson of Illinois

Republicans

1.Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona

2.Vice President Richard Nixon of California

3.Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York

Independent

1.Virginia Senator Harry F. Byrd

Issues*

1.Civil Rights

2.The U-2 Crisis

3.Education

4.Berlin

5.The Soviet Threat

6.Welfare

7.Big Buiseness vs. Big Labor

8.The Economy

9.Iron Curtain

10.balanced budget

11.deficit spending

12.Protection of Consumers

13.Housing

14.Indian Affairs

15.Veterans

16.Juvenile Delinquency

17.Science and Technology

18.Natural Resources

19.Agriculture

20.National Defense

I'm having some trouble with these, anyone have any ideas.

*Issues 13-21 I got off the offical 1960 Republican platform which can be found here: http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=25839

If anyone has any ideas, comments, or suggestions, please say so quickly so that I don't have to go back and redo.

One last thing, the independent Byrd only got .4% of the general election, but ended up with 13 electors due to unpleged Democratic delegates voting for him, you can find out more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_us_election. What I may do is create a separate "political unit" made up of unpleged delegates, but that would be a little bit off, because in real life he won a couple of states. If anyone has any ideas on how to represent this please say so.

Also, as you can see, you really don't need the offical editor to make a scenario.

You can count me as part of the team, - just give me a job.

I take it you won't be adding favorite-son's?

I have to disagree with you their, make them very weak, but you should add them.

Favorite Sons like Stuart Symington & Robert B. Meyner came ahead in delegates, then another national canidate.

Why insult the other members like this? People work together here and respect the hard work that it takes to create scenarios, they don't just take the ideas of others and claim them as there own. I can say with 100% certainty, Nobody here is going to steal you ideas, work, or scenario.

are you just trying to stir up crap and start flame wars?

Contribute or go, because i am fed up of seeing you cause more people headaches.

You've turned a jovial comment into something bigger.

Point me towards where you personally have "work[ed] together"?

just shut up, or go. your choice

With nonsense like this, its no wonder why so few post here. I'll take the second option and go. Thanks Zion for making this such a fun board. 80soft must be very proud of you. I am. :)

I might add them, but their was about ten or and that seemed like a lot of Democrats. If you want to help what would you like to do? You could create percentages, or help with issues, whatever you want. Also what do you think we should do about the unpleged electors that went with Byrd?

Thanks for offering to help.

Byrd didn't actually run in 1960, he never announced a candidacy nor did he actively pursue any votes, he was just a protest vote for Southerners uncomfortable with Kennedy, so I don't know if I'd actually include him. As an alternative I would include Orval Faubus as the States' Rights candidate and make him a little stronger in the Southern states.

I think that, if you can, place Byrd on the ballot in Mississippi and Alabama, and take Kennedy off of the ballot in Mississippi. If this is not possible than i would give Byrd 0% in every state but Bama and Miss. I can also help with this scenario.

I agree, a much better idea than mine (considering Fabus only got 44,000 votes nationally). Byrd also got 1 elector from Oklahoma.

I think what I'll do is turn Byrd off by default. Thanks for telling me about Orval Faubus, I'll add him to the canidates.

I doubt I could find acurate polling. I don't have the books and resources a lot of the scenario creators have. All I have is google & a lot of time. xD

I have an old copy of the Theodore H. White classic The Making Of The President 1960 It has the number of votes and percentages for Nixon, Byrd, and Kennedy in the general. I won't promise anything, but I think it may have primary results as well (I'll have to dig it out of my closet and check). If you need any help with that, I'll do what I can.

Customer Service?! Can we get an IP ban once and for all?

BTW, don't know if this has been brought up yet, but TheorySpark is supposed to release their own, official USA 1960 scenario. However, this will be great to tide us over until they do.

Why not make two new 'states' (the electoral vote areas that Byrd won in Alabama and Oklahoma) and make it so no one else except Byrd can campaign in them and Alabama? (And Byrd obviously should not campaign in any other area)

Only issue would be population, but it shouldn't be too hard. Just get population of said states and if possible to gain regional population in said states then just use calculator to subtract the numbers for the actual state. Of course Byrd is (unrealistically) going to get 100% of the vote anyway if it's a realistic number or 1 voter, so perhaps that isn't important. But if you can have it so Kennedy and Nixon find campaigning in said states not worth it at all, then that'd result in a realistic outcome.

Whats with this.

This person has been stalking an insignificant Canadian party-changing MP for years and has been on the board forever; for laughs, try looking up "michaelm" and "belinda stronach" on Google Search...either way, he's nuts and I would encourage everyone to report this comment and I encourage the board administrator to ban the IP.

BTW, I would also recommend An Unfinished Life by Robert Dallek...see if you can get it from the library for the relevant parts pertaining to 1960, but overall it's pretty good.
