2017 Dutch Election - FPTP System

Recommended Posts

For quite some time I've been playing around with and building a scenario of the Netherlands under a FPTP-system. This is the result.

Basics

  • This is entirely fictional.
  • There are 250 districts. District boundaries do not cross provincial boundaries. The amount of districts that each province is allocated is proportional to its population.
  • There is one district to represent the Caribbean Netherlands (Saba, Bonaire, St. Eustatius).
  • Not all districts are contested by all parties.
  • Vote share is based on the 2012 results.

Parties

Obviously in a FPTP-system you wouldn't see the kind of fragmentation that you see currently in the Netherlands. Therefore I have made 6 parties which broadly represent the current political attitutes.

  • Democratic People's Party - DVP

A classic centre-right party with conservative, christian-democratic and liberal factions. A combination of VVD, CDA, and a little bit of D66 in the Dutch context. Internationally, this party would be most like the CDU in Germany, the Conservatives in the U.K., etc.

  • Social Democratic Alliance - SDA

A centre-left social democratic party with some socialist factions in the North and South. Combination of PvdA, SP, DENK, etc. Most akin to the SDP, Labour, etc.

  • Social Liberal Party - SLP

Left wing, progressive. Greens and social liberals. They care most about the environment and smashing the patriarchy. Strong in dense urban centres and university towns. In the Dutch context this would be a party attracting votes from GL, some D66 voters, Animal Party, etc.

  • National Centre Party - NCP

Far right populists. Ultimate goal is to instate a muslim ban and leave the European Union. PVV/FVD in the Netherlands, outside of that you could think of AfD, Lega, etc. Strong in Limburg and in working class areas in urban areas.

  • Christian Conservative Union - CCU

The name kind of says it all really. This is a combination of CU and SGP in the Dutch context. Strong along the Bible Belt.

  • Frisian National Party - FNP

A centre-left party in favour of more autonomy for the Friesland province in the North. As such it only contests the districts in Friesland.

It is still a work in progress, I'll let you guys test it and give me feedback.

Quite like the idea, though there's definitely more that needs to be done. I'd say the issues and the parties + regions political positions are the main priority.

Otherwise, its definitely a campaign I'd like to play more of.

I still think a more appropriate electoral system is needed to avoid horrible distortion of results and AI campaigning in this scenario and others like it. @admin_270 needs to step up his game and stop putting what could be one of the biggest expansions to his game seemingly nearly the bottom of his priorities, inexplicably.
