To me, it's context. The insanity of comparing these two random candidates' platforms, usually from radically different time periods and events going on, with different levels of social, economic, and technological development, and completely different expectations, in the same election.

We could be reasoned with in some areas. In others, he was a hard absolutist expecting complete and uncompromising obedience. It depended on the issue at stake. But he was predictable as to which was which.
