Virginia Governor - 2017

Recommended Posts

Since 270soft's campaign site seems to be down (at least for me), I decided to upload my updated version of this here.

It's Virginia's 2017 Governor race, with the map being the Congressional district boundaries (since there are waaaay too many counties/independent cities for me to deal with in a sitting).

It's still in the early stages so there will be obviously some things that need to be improved, but I think the major features are solidly dealt with (i.e. candidates, issues, events, endorsers). Feedback is appreciated.

This is great! If I have time once I finish my Georgia simulation, I would definitely love to try and adapt the map to the full county-city mode, if you are down with it.

Although I'm not overly familiar with Virginia politics (except, to a degree, during the Byrd Machine Era, but that wasn't really a very fun or competitive time to set election scenarios, all-in-all), but I'll give it a look.

I am absolutely fine with you doing that! You have my full permission.

@deblano It is a great scenario! I was wondering if you wouldn't mind if i used it as a base for other scenarios?

Go ahead! I've been a bit behind on updating my scenario tbh because of school/job search reasons...

I made a substantial edit to this scenario, as I created more regions (i.e. lumping counties/cities together) and then adjusting the percentages (through rough calculations and using Dave's Redistricting App for electoral data). I plan to focus on polishing stuff and adding more playable candidates, but I'm just posting this update here that way it isn't accidentally deleted

I like the idea of doing it via CDs.

There's a user here named @SirLagsalott who made a previous Virginia scenario a while back and apparently was from Virginia who felt the county/independent city map was more or less "essential," because of the notable urban/rural divide in the vote. But given I'm not personally from Virginia, nor have ever set foot in the "Old Dominion," and currently only personally know one person in RL from there, I couldn't vouch for that personally - just quoting another poster who only ever pops in very rarely nowadays.

It wasn't entirely essential, but it was hard for me to think of any good way to combine the counties in a lot of areas - while some coal country counties could probably be merged without sacrificing anything, there are pockets of cities that are very different from the areas surrounding them, so to me it felt unfair to assign those cities coal-country positions just because they're close together. It was stubborn and dumb and led to me being too annoyed to finish the scenario at all, so I'm fine with this substitute. I think using congressional districts for it is a bad idea, though. The game plays weirdly with just 11 regions.

@Deblano I personally like the updated map. I also believe using the counties/independant cities map would be way to much for playing and for creating.

Thanks! I'm considering making another Virginia map with even more lumped counties and keeping some larger cities that are easy to draw.

Hey guys, I know that this is not the spirit of how this thread has resulted, but I just finished my 133-county/city model of Virginia, linked here: http://campaigns.270soft.com/2019/12/24/virginia-gubernatorial-2021/

Works out pretty well for me, you have buttons you can press to get all the small counties/cities not easily visible on the map. Hope you have fun playing! I'll work on a breakdown by CD soon enough once I play it through a few more times.

Your version pretty much blew mine out of the water! Incredible.
