East Germany - 1990

Recommended Posts

Due to a personal request by PM by regular poster here, this scenario, from my recent list, will be done first. It is relatively far along on development. It was the first, and, as it turned out, last fully contested, multi-party, and free-and-fair election for the Volkskammer of the German Democratic Republic, in the wake of the Peaceful Revolution, the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the removal from power of Erich Honecker by Socialist Unity Party leadership, and lack of support for the East German government from Mikhail Gorbachev. More info will be up shortly, but I have to log for a few hours in a bit.

Any interest here? I'm trying to move away from political debate, which always brings out the worst in me (as I'm sure you've all seen).

I'm interested in some level for any new scenario if it is made well. I'm unlikely to have the time to be very helpful in the creation of it. I might test it out at some point. I think this scenario would be exciting for anyone interested in post-WWII German history or end of Cold War era history.

Can't wait! K4E desperately needs more scenarios, especially ones based on real world elections, it seems the majority of the scenarios made for K4E are of fictional countries.

Sure, tell me if you need any help with German sources.

I'd love to see this election! Sadly I lack the knowledge  to offer anything of value to the scenario.

I think I might need a bit of help from @Conservative Elector 2 on something. Figuring out who were the actual leaders of two small parties within the East Germany at the time of the 1990 Volkskammer election is proving difficult to discern from what resources are available - which are all in German. Usually, though not at all fluent, I can get the rough and coarse gist of what's being said in German text, but it's so abbreviated in what I have available, that I can't quite make it out.

Sure, of which parties do you want to know the leaders? And which sources do you have already? You can also our message board, if it is still active in the PM section.

Alright, this is mostly done, apart from grinding "virtual ridings" and a few other things that need adding and adjusting, which are:

-Two new leaders for each of two minor parties

-Adjustment to the issue stances in general and by certain parties, especially on the left, as, with several additional parties added, the PDS are no longer the furthest left on every issue

-Endorsers and interviewers

-Calculating how much an Eastern Mark was worth in 1990 for money co-efficients

I made a mistake taking @ThePotatoWalrus off of my ignore list. I have now rectified that. Now, on to constructive custom scenario creation projects, which is about the only way I don't get distracted with vehement soapbox screeds on these forums.

Since I was not able to find these leaders, I would suggest you just put in a collective leadership with a default icon.

That may have to be done in the done, though it pains my OCD to do so. :(

Alright, returning to this project - and a more productive use of my time - at this point I just have to verify and shift around party issue stances, determine regional issue centres, then endorsers and interviewers, calculate the working value of a 1990 Ost Mark, and then grind out ridings and balance the PR aspect. So, a statistical majority of the work has been done already.

So, since discussion of the current United States Presidential election and certain other hot-button current events issues are leading to frustration and antipathy from me and conflict and alienation with others on this forum, I'm going to try again to detach myself from that part of the forum's activities and return to custom scenario creation, starting with finishing the last touches to this one.

Alright! Who's the reformists, who's the hardliners, who're the nationalists?

This was after the Peaceful Revolution and the Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. It was the only election on East Germany (before Germany unification a number of months later) that was fully contested and free and fair. The Socialist Unity Party (the East German "Soviet satellite" Communist Party) had already rebranded itself the PDS under Hans Modron after Erich Honecker and Egon Krenz were pressured into resigning. Most of the "satellite yesman" parties long-subordinate to the Socialist Unity Party on the single candidate list of the National Front of Democratic Germany took the advantage to run their own campaigns and platforms, especially the Eastern branch of the CDU, which bucked the Neuschian "Socialist Christianity" doctrine they'd long advocated in East Germany and moved more sharply and suddenly to their Western counterpart's platform and viewpoint, and a new Eastern branch of the SDP (the first after the SDP branch in the Soviet Occupation Area that became East Germany under Otto Grotewohl was "pressured" to merge with the Communist Party of Germany in that area, led by Wilhelm Pieck, but with real power in the hands of Walter Ulbricht, to form the aforementioned Socialist Unity in the first place). And a bunch of new parties formed practically out of nothing, to contest, like the Democratic Awakening, the Democratic Social Union, the East Greens (to distinguish them organizationally from the Green Party of Germany in West Germany) and their electoral allies, Alliance '90 (whose name is now fused with the name of the whole, present-day German Green Party), and a bunch of smaller ones. It was NOT even remotely similar to any previous East German election in nature, EXCEPT that the candidates being elected were still being elected to a lawmaking chamber called the Volkskammer (or People's Chamber) - which Gerald Ford had, apparently once sardonically in his presidency during a visit to Berlin, jokingly referred to it to an aide as the "Folk Scammer." It's election style had changed in 1990, since then.

For what it's worth, an American professor who was in Berlin during 1989-1990 claimed the following: "One week before the elections in East Germany on March 18, 1990, polls indicated that the Christian Democrats would get less than ten percent of the votes. The Social Democrats and the Communists [i.e. the PDS] would win. Seeing the handwriting on the wall, the Christian Democrats changed tunes on the all-important currency question and promised an immediate one-to-one exchange rate if they won. The next poll indicated that the Christian Democrats would win, and, indeed, they did." (Austin Murphy, The Last Year of a Country That Never Existed, 1995, p. 94)

I don't know how accurate or exaggerated that is, but it might be worth including as an event.
