Gov. Terry McAuliffe is not running

Recommended Posts

McAuliffe seemed like the logical establishment choice if Biden didn't jump in the race. He's also a Clinton acolyte. His campaign manager (my cousin) ended up being Clinton's campaign manager in 2016. His response and reaction to the Charlottesville riots and protests was probably his high point as a potential candidate. However, three major Virginian Democrats were scandaled and Biden, presumably the establishment favorite, would be hurt by a McAuliffe entry. I also think that Clinton pressed McAuliffe not to enter since Biden allowed Clinton to run in 2016 without competing against her in the primary. Policy-wise McAuliffe would not have been among my top 5 favorite candidates, but I think he would have been a capable president.

This leaves Biden, Abrams, De Blasio, Bennet, Mouton, and Bullock as the remaining Democrats not to enter the race at this point; although, Biden is definitely running now.

I always hoped McAuliffe wouldn’t run. As a Virginian, he wasn’t a bad governor. But he also epitomized the bizarre way that parties started to view Virginia as their partisan playground, deploying their former chairs Gillespie and McAuliffe as statewide candidates despite having little ties to Virginia other than the fact they made their money there. They’re both partisan hacks who I hope we never have to see again.

Definitely the right choice for him.  I think criticism that he is "Hillary Junior"...once a strength, now a weakness...would have eliminated him.  I suspect it's a big part of what has (or will) hurt Gillibrand as well.

Former Governor McCauliffe in character and content does not match the current electorate and mood right now.  However, he is now positioned to run for Governor of Virginia again in 2021 since the current Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General are scandal-tainted.
