Socialist Party Playthrough 1900 Onwards

Recommended Posts

You read the title , so I don't think I need to explain what I'm doing. House, Governor, Local, (and Senate once they begin to be decided by popular vote) elections, as well as party membership, will be determined by a synthesis of rolling a d20(this is also how I'll determine how a president's term went), and the last elections results.

State of the race on election day, before polls close.

Tickets are Debs/Bryan for the SDP(I love how easy it is to get someone to be your VP in this game, you just badger them until they say yes), Dewey/Stevenson for the Democrats, and McKinley/Roosevelt for the Republicans.

Local election(This includes city councils, to state assemblies) 17/20 - The most notable success of the Socialist Party, other than the presidential election, was it's wild success in local elections, where it returned nearly 1,000 local offices, including 70 mayors, most notable being Victor Burger, and Job Harriman being elected mayor of Milwaukee, and Los Angeles respectively.

House elections 15/20 - The Socialists were able to pick up a respectable 8 seats mostly from California, Michigan, and Wisconsin

Governor elections 8/20 -Despite success House and local elections, the Socialists only managed to win one Governorship that being Robert La Follet in Wisconcin, with the other closest being New York, where Benjamin Hanford came in a close second to the winning Democratic candidate, John B. Stanchfield.

Party Membership 13/20 - Socialist numbers grow and they boast nearly 350,000 members.

William McKinley 4/20. William McKinley was assassinated shortly into his term, by Anarchist Leon Czolgosz, Teddy Roosevelt Succeeded him.

Teddy Roosevelt's first term pre-midterms, 1901-1902 2/20- During Roosevelt's first year in office the U.S Economy crashed, with most people blaming McKinley's high tariff, this lead to Republican support evaporating, and many people turning to the Democrats or the Socialists (Republicans get disadvantage on all midterm throws, Socialists and Dems get advantage)

Congress before midterms HOR: Democrats:155  Republicans:189 Socialists:8 Populists:5 Senate: Dems:32  Reps:49 Soc:0 Pop:4 Silver Reps:3 Silver:2

1902 midterms:

House all 386(up from 1900's 357) seats up for election:

Reps 11/20

Dems 9/20

Socialists 18/20

Populists 8/20

Senate:

Reps 8/20

Dems 17/20

Socialists 15/20

After midterms

HOR: Democrats:186  Republicans:174 Socialists:23 Populists:1 No majority, moderate Democrat elected as speaker with help from moderate Republicans

Senate: Dems:47  Reps:30 Soc:1 Pop:0 2 retired 2 lost re-election to Democrats Silver Reps:0 2 joined Dems one retired and seat was won by Democrats Silver:0 both retired and their seats were won by Democrats

Roosevelt's term 1902-1904 14/20- Despite a Democrat congress, Roosevelt is able to start turning the U.S economy around, and by the end of 1903, things seem to be looking up, but the Socialist party is still a very strong force, dominating the West Coast and most of the steel belt, and Roosevelt's reelection is anything but assured.

Tickets:

Sen. Eugene Debs/ Gov. Robert La Follet

Pres. Theodore Roosevelt/ Fmr. Sen. Charles Fairbanks

Fmr. Gen. Nelson Miles(fun fact, this is the man that lead troops to crush the Pullman strike, which Debs was key in organizing)/ Fmr. Sen. Henry Davis(more than 80 years old!)

Miles was hounded late into the campaign by revelations that he had helped cover up corruption among war financiers, many of who financed his campaign.

Theodore Roosevelt was hampered by an economy that was still struggling, and his frequent hunting trips allowed his opponents to paint him as a man more interested in his own comfort and enjoyment, rather than one fit to lead the nation.

Gene and Bob are America's next president and Vice-President respectively! Due to the margin of their victory, I'm classifying this as a wave election for the socialists, meaning they get advantage on all rolls.

Local election 16/20 - Socialists experienced similar success in 1904 as they did in 1900, now returning 100 mayors in cities all across America, as well as controlling 2/3 of state legislatures.

House elections 17/20 - The Socialists saw massive gains in the House gaining nearly 140 seats, and elected a moderate member of their party, Norman Thomas of New York,  as Speaker.

Governor elections 17/20 - The Socialist Party rode Debs's coattails to expand their Governorships from 1 to nearly a third of all states.

Party Membership 14 /20 - Party membership rises heartily to about 450,000 members

Republican and Democratic reaction to election: 5/20- After the election of radical anti-capitalist, Eugene Debs, most moderates in the Republican and Democratic parties came together to form The Unionist Party, but it's numbers were deflated somewhat when the more conservative members left to form The Conservative Union Party, or just, The Conservative Party.

Up next: Debs's first term

Congress at the start of Eugene Debs's first term 1905

HOR(389): Socialists: 200 Unionsts: 143 Conservatives:44

Senate: Socialists:3 Unionists:59 Conservatives:28

With a hostile senate Debs gets disadvantage on his term roll.

Deb's First term 15/20- Despite a hostile Senate, the Socialists are able to pass numerous acts of legislation, such as nationalizing the steel industry, giving women full suffrage, and changing the senate to being elected by popular vote. Oklahoma was added as a state during this time.

Midterms:

House:

Socialists:  17/20- The Socialists used Debs's popularity to make big gains, the majority of which came from the midwest, helped in no small party by the Socialist Parties popularity among women voters.

Unionists: 3/20- The 1906 midterms saw deep Unionist loses, helped in no part by a confused and disjointed party.

Conservatives: 11/20- With deep Unionist loses, the Conservative Party made gains in more conservative areas, and was able to increase their caucus by a small amount.

Senate:

Socialists: 16/20- The Socialist Party's popularity provided them bountiful gaines in the midterms, especially in the Senate elections, where, no longer hindered by being elected by state legislatures, The Socialist Party was able to elect a number of new senators, all of whom would soon get to work to help Debs make America a workers paradise.

Unionists: 9/20- With the passage of the 16th amendment the Unionists saw heavy loses and in most places only won by agreeing to a fusion ballot with Conservatives, but they were able to get Former President Roosevelt elected in New York, giving hope to many in the party.

Conservatives: 8/20- The Conservatives saw many of their Senators lose re-election, including their popular leader Oscar Underwood.

HOR(389+5 from Oklahoma): Socialists: 240 Unionsts: 104 Conservatives:50

Senate:(92) Socialists:50 Unionists:30 Conservatives:12

Debs's first term 1906-1909 16/20- With a much friendlier congress, Debs was able to vastly improve working conditions for many Americans, and nationalized all public utilities, as well as banking, shipping, and mining, though this has given him many enemies, and the capitalists will surely spare no effort in defeating him.

(Do note that, given their landslide victory in the presidential election, I decided to give the Socialists advantage to their rolls

Local election  14/20 -  The Socialist Party is able to maintain their control of two thirds of all state legislatures, and even managed to sure up their majority in some.

House elections 15 /20 -  The house elections saw the Socialists gain enough seats to override turn a president's veto.

Governor elections 12 /20 -  The socialist were able to improve their margins in the Governor's races, but did not win any new governorships.

Party Membership  17/20 -  The Socialist party is able to grow it's numbers to 850,000 card carrying members.

Senate elections 18/20- Socialist experienced a landslide in the Senate elections, and now have a veto proof majority in both houses.

Party Unity 11/20- The party is somewhat united, though there is often heated disagreements between the multiple "caucuses", which include; "The Libertarians", lead by Secy of State William Haywood, and Governor of New York, Daniel De Leon, and who seek to establish a decentralized Socialist society by any means necessary, often derided as "purely anarchist", by its opponents "The Reformists" lead by Vice President, Robert La Follet, and Speaker of the House, Norman Thomas, who wish to reform the current system into a fairer system, but still leave some elements of a Capitalist system, a much smaller group of Socialist, that might grow in coming years is the "Totalists", lead by Governor of Ohio, C. E. Ruthenberg, and Representative William Z. Foster of Massachusetts, they seek to bring about a workers revolution lead by a vanguard of 'Revolutionary Intellectuals', the group gained the name from a quote by Thomas attacking Foster in an interview with the New York Times saying that "He (Foster) and his allies seek to just to replace capitalist oppression, with an oppression of bureaucrats, seeking to totalise the state into every person's life. If anything Totaist is a more fitting title for them rather than Socialist."

(I have something planned for Debs, next term, it will certainly shake things up ;))

President Dead! Debs Assassinated after speech to the IWW

June 1st 1909, The Minneota Tribune

Yesterday President Eugene Victor Debs, was shot while exiting a labor rally in Saint Louis Minnesota. The president had just finished giving a speech to the IWW, a union that he had helped to found, before leaving the building to mix with the crowd outside. As was usual the President brought big crowds with him wherever he spoke. The assassin was able to mix into the crowd, before working his way to President Debs. The assassin pushed his way through the crowd before taking aim at the president. The assassin fired three times two going into the president's abdomen, and the other missing him completely, the assassin attempted to escape, but was grabbed and stopped by a finish immigrant named Matti Halberg. After being questioned by police the assassin claimed he had been contacted by a group of industrialist lead by J.D Rockefeller, who paid him to assassinate the president, national authorities are investigating this claim. Debs was subsequently transported to to the hospital in critical condition, but was pronounced dead at 11:09 PM. Upon news of the assassination Vice President Robert La Follet has been sworn in as President, and it now falls upon him to lead the country through this time of national turmoil. Acting Chair of the Socialist Party Morris Hillquit has been sworn in as Vice President upon the request of La Follett. International leaders such as Leader of the Labor Party of The United Kingdom Keir Hardie, and the Co-Leader of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, and Leader of the Opposition, Karl Liebknecht have sent their regard to Debs family, and The United States, during this time of national mourning.

I was just about to ask when the Constitutional Convention to draft a new socialistic People's Constitution was going to be called, but it obviously won't be during a period of mourning for Debs.

Morris Hillquit announces resignation from National Executive Committee, election date set for December 12th!

Working Man's News, August 9th 1909

Vice President and Acting Chair of the Socialist Party of America's National Executive Committee Morris Hillquit has announced his resignation yesterday. This resignation comes at a time when tension inside the party is at an all time high, with Secretary Haywood's and Speaker Thomas's rivalry reaching new heights after the death of the unifying figure head Eugene V. Debs. With his resignation an election has been called for December 12th, already we see that this may be the most important NEC election in the Socialist Party's history, with  this election not only determining the future direction of the party, but the future of America as well, as Socialists hold the majority in both houses, and hold enough state legislatures to pass a constitutional amendment. Both the Libertarians, and the Reformists have already started preparing for the December election, and have started recruiting candidates. This election campaign will coincide with a continued investigation into the assassination of Eugene Debs, what role these investigations will play remains to be seen, though J.D. Rockefeller, one of the main suspects in the investigation, has denied any and all connections to the assassin.

Connections found between J.D. Rockefeller and Eugene Debs's assassin!

Working Man's News, August 20th 1909

After months of investigation, federal investigators reveal that John Davison Rockefeller had connections to Eugene Debs's assassin. They report that Rockefeller had paid an American Private Military organization made up of veterans, which the assassin belonged to. Rockefeller states that he simply donated to what he thought was a charitable organization aimed at helping out of work veterans. Investigators say they are still investigating the matter, but note that legal action is being taken, though this may take a few weeks to take effect it has also been revealed that many wealthy businessmen may also be connected to the conspiracy to kill Debs, as among the list of funders of the organization there was Henry Ford, J.P. Morgan, and Andrew Carnegie.

The Bankers Militia! J.P. Morgan found financing reactionary paramilitary groups!

The Worker's News September 10th 1909

A few weeks ago we reported that it was discovered that a group of wealthy businessmen had been funding a Paramilitary group that had a role in the assassination of Eugene Debs. Well just yesterday it was announced by federal investigators that they've found direct connections between J. P. Morgan and groups of right-wing soldiers of fortune. Morgan claims he uses these groups purely as protection from "That Socialist menace we call a government", but the fact that these militias have been proven to have a connection to violence against the government, including being involved in the assassination of Eugene Debs, Federal Investigators say they will be ramping up the investigation into the so-called "Business Plot".

President La Follete almost assassinated while at a ball! Assassination attempt is rumored to have connection to the "Business Plot"!

The Wobbly Daily, September 21st 1909

Last night, at a ball held by Supreme Court Chief Justice Louis Brandeis, President Robert La Follete was almost assassinated. The assassin had posed as a server to sneak into the party, and had been attempting to get close to the president all night long. At around 11:00 PM the assassin nudged his way to the president, before taking out his knife, which he had hid in a coat pocket. President La Follete, seeing what the assassin planned to do, was able to disarm the man, before police arrived to take the fiend away. "I can see why they call him "Fighting Bob" now!" said one guest who saw La Follete disarm the wold be assassin. This assassination attempt comes just eleven days, after J.P. Morgan was found to be building a private army for himself, by financing reactionary paramilitary groups. Police are currently investigating the possibility that the assassination attempt is connected to the so called "Business Plot".

Would Be Assassin Connected To Alleged Plot By Monied Interests.

The Proletarian News, September 24th, 1909

Federal investigators have confirmed that George Lovejoy Rockwell, a failed stage actor, and the would be assassin of President Robert La Follette has confessed to being connected to the "Business Plot", an alleged conspiracy by a group of wealthy industrialists led by J.D. Rockefeller, to destabilize, and overthrow the Socialist led government of the United States,  and install a corporatist government by force. The accused ringleaders of the plot have denied any connection to the assassin, but President La Follette has issued Executive Order #2859 which orders the freezing of Henry Ford, Andrew Carnegie, J.D. Rockefeller, and J.P. Morgan's bank accounts, all four of who, were mentioned by Rockwell as leaders of the plot to overthrow the government. Governor Daniel De Leon of New York has criticized the President's actions, saying that more aggressive action is needed, and has started cooperating with the Industrial Workers of the World to form "Union Militias" that they say will be used to "Defend the future of the American Revolution from reactionary forces". What this means for the future of America remains to be seen, but most people agree that this is a fork in the road moment for America and her future.

The International Worker, October 6st, 1909

James Bertram, personal secretary to Industrialist Andrew Carnegie, has revealed to federal investigators, that a group of Wealthy Industrialists are plotting the overthrow of the American Government. The group is led by Standard Oil founder J.D. Multiple Union and Conservative Party politicians, including Former President turned Senator Theodore Roosevelt, have been implicated as implicit in the plot to overthrow the government, leading to mass resignations. Secretary of State William Haywood has been highly vocal in calling for the prosecution of the plotters, and has even taken to calling hem "Direct enemies of the people of America". Congress has quickly passed a bill nationalizing the businesses, and bank accounts of the plotters.

Andrew Carnegie, J.D. Rockefeller, and others, arrested while attempting to flee the country.

The Proletarian, October 10th, 1909

New York State Police have confirmed that Andrew Carnegie, J.D. Rockefeller, Henry Ford, Nelson Mills, ,Theodore Roosevelt Charles Evan Hughes ,and J. P. Morgan, have been arrested while attempting to flee the country to Canada, in order to escape prosecution for plotting to overthrow the United States government. With their capture, it is likely that the plotters will have to face trial for treason, and would almost certainly be convicted, but what their punishment would be remains to be seen. Following the arrest of their two most popular leaders, the Unionist party has disbanded, and it seems that Liberalism's power as a political force in the US is dead, a far cry from when the country was founded, or even just a generation ago.

They all should have been arrested and tried in RL. A rotten bunch of crooks!

The Eighth Congress of The Second International Opens in Copenhagen

The Masses, August 28,1910 , Written by John Silas Reed

Opened with the customary singing of "The Internationale" the Eighth Congress of The Second International opens today in Copenhagen opens today. Attended by 887 representatives of Socialist Parties around the globe, the feeling I gathered as I entered the convention hall was one of hope, with the Socialists in America experiencing a period of political domination, not seen since the 1820's, and the British Labour Party under Keir Hardie looking poised to win the upcoming November Elections, to the ongoing general strike in Sweden, nobody can deny, Socialism is on the rise, everywhere in the world.  The question is, however, what form will this rising tide of socialism take? Will it be the traditional centralized Marxism, or will it take a lurch to the Libertarian side, after the victories experienced by the Syndicalists in America, or will it take a step into authoritarianism, like the kind advocated for by Russian theorist, Vladimir Lenin? The answer to this question remains to be seen, and it will likely be up to the workers of each country to decide which path to take. Set to take place over the week, from the 28th of August, to the 3rd of September,  Emile Vandervelde the chair of The Second International, has released the agenda for the International Congress at Copenhagen as the following: (1) Relations between Co-operative Organisations and Political Parties; (2) Unemployment; (3) Arbitration and Disarmament; (4) International results of Labour Legislation; (5) International Protest against Capital Punishment; (6) Steps to ensure the Carrying Out of Resolutions of Congress; (7) Organisation of International Solidarity; (8) Resolutions on other questions.
