Three gaffes and Kerry's out

Recommended Posts

Remember the guy has got MS! ;)

And I just want to respond to this:

And he doesn't have terrorists... there was no link between his government and Al-Qaida.

He doesn't have a link?

For godsake, he IS a terrorist! He's been mass-executing his own citizens for years. I pretty much see that as terrorism.

Regarding MS, that doesn't make him more gaffe prone, surely? One of the huge themes in the West Wing has been educating their fictional America (and therefore the show's viewers) about MS. While we know Bartlet's memory can be poor and he is prone to relapses that cause physical collapse, he's never made errors on issues. Intrigued at your choice...

On Sadam, I'd have thought terrorism is generally used to describe something vert different to the terrible effects of brutal tyranny. Unless you say a terrorist is simply somebody who causes terror (and thus a horror movie director is a terrorist), surely the word describes a type of military campaign, rather than internal government repression?

Thanks,

Richard.

Yeah, the world is better, in a sort of idealistic realm-of-the-forms sort of way. But is America better off? We're stuck in Iraq-uagmire for a generation. By every objective indicator things are getting worse. All the painted schoolhouses in the world can't make up for the fact that the country is falling apart into a religious and ethnic civil war, and even in the best case scenario we'll "save the day" by installing a Saddam-lite puppet.

A better plan would have been to deal with Iran and North Korea first (since both are developing and proliferating WMD), and then to have kicked Iraq out of the Axis of Evil club... for not being sufficiently evil.

Clearly, I am not in agreeance with our current foreign policy.

Stress tends to induce attacks, and if you're very busy on the campaign trail there's quite a bit of stress. A person suffering from MS can have an attack without anyone noticing it. If it is a light attack, he may be able to give a speech, but make a small gaffe. Also, it's possible that due to symptoms of blurred vision he can't see the prompter and has to make something up. Now Bartlet's a gifted speaker, but if he has to improve a lot even he can make mistakes that wouldn't have been made if he would give the speeches written by the speechwriting staff.

Well, there are two different definitions used in the world:

1) Terrorism is a tactic of violence that targets civilians, with the objective of forcing an enemy to favorable terms, by creating fear, demoralization, or political discord in the attacked population.

This first definition would include Saddam as a terrorist.

2) "Terrorism" is a pejorative characterisation of an enemy's attacks as conforming to an immoral philosophy of violence, in a manner outside of warfare, or prohibited in the laws of war.

This would NOT include dictators.

So I guess you could say we're both right. :)

Unless you say a terrorist is simply somebody who causes terror (and thus a horror movie director is a terrorist), surely the word describes a type of military campaign, rather than internal government repression?

Definition of a terrorist:

Terrorist is a label for one who personally is involved in an act of terrorism.

About the horror movie director comment: the director doesn't CAUSE terror, he merely creates the illusion of terror. He would be a terrorist if he would have slaughtered all the actors on the set while recording it, but in that case he would be arrested for it.
