2016 - The start of an alternate timeline

Recommended Posts

This covers the reboot of a project I'd actually started even before the 2012 election happened, originally with the old P4E2008 engine. It starts in the modern day, but with a few changes, and proceeds down an alternate timeline into decades into the future. It features not just US Federal and Congressional, but a few important and pivotal State elections, and a fair number of foreign elections, to detail a long and complicated storyline. The first scenario is the 2016 election as it seems to be headed, but with a powerful Third Party called the "Restoration Party" headed by a charismatic Boston billionaire named Arthur Green who runs on a suspiciously amorphous and nebulously-defined platform of "rebuilding America and restoring her national pride and as the once-great nation she was." Like Trump and, previously, Perot, he has the money and connections to finance his own campaign and not be beholden to endorsers and lobbyists. Although very charismatic and appealing superficially to many demographics normally courted by both parties, more thoughtful pundits and critics on both sides of the spectrums question his lack of specific, well-fined planks. Also, he has just "suddenly appeared" on the radar, having next to no previous well-known public history except as a very successful, but previously private, telecommunications magnate.

True, though this one has the advantage of being (other than the fictional alternate universe schism) more true to what's going on now. I had a REALLY wonky field for both major parties' primaries in my original take on this in, what, 2010 when I made the original version. Palin was a frontrunner? Petraeus was considered electable? Emanuel Rahm was thought of as an "heir apparent" figure to Obama? Ventura, taking back up the Reform label, was the fourth polling party (GE polls), initially, behind the two big ones and the Restoration Party, sitting at a whopping 4-5% nationally! And there were other strange things like that.

I'm starting this fresh, so that all the current RW candidates and parties (and off-by-default ones) are present. Bloomberg will be an off-by-default Democrat instead of a possible independent (for reasons I was reading in a few sources, and which are similar, but distinct, to Lincoln Chafee;s party choices of late), but there will be an Independent, who'll be a surprise (as well, Trump will get a potential 1912 option of running as an Independent or hijacking the currently largely moribund Reform Party), and the fictitious Restoration Party, which is one of the pillars of the progress of this whole alternate history time-arc will be there, and (if I can find a way to set it to do so), a separate Tea Party with Sarah Palin and Rick Perry (who aren't currently in the GOP Primaries) as well as potentially Cruz, Rand, Huckabee, and (another option for) Trump if a far-right candidacy is obviously edged out (again) in the GOP Primaries. Another minor party which may be a bit more relevant further down the alternate timeline may also appear, but then again, it may wait for later. Any other feedback is welcome!

I've also decided to add the Peace and Freedom and Socialist Worker's Parties. Also, all of the Third Parties get potential recognized names who may decide to (or be convinced to) run on their label, but begin off-by-default. The Libertarians potentially get Jesse Ventura, Ted Nugent, Gary Johnson, and possibly a defection by Rand Paul or a campaign restart by Scott Walker. The Constitution Party potentially get Chuck Baldwin (again), Kirk Cameron, Phil Robertson, and a possible defections by Ben Carson and Rick Santorum, including it's current RL candidate, former Congressman John Hostetler. The Green Party potentially get Elon Musk, Phil Radford, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Darryl Hannah. The Peace and Freedom Party are being gone over as to whom they potentially get, on top of their already celebrity candidate for the nomination, Roseanne Barr. The Socialist Worker's Party (off-by-default, as they haven't officially registered in 2016 in RL) have as they're standard candidates Maura DeLuca, Eric Flint, Fred Feldman, Mary-Alice Waters, and Stephanie Coontz, and two possible recognized names: Trent Peacock, a notorious hacker, alleged (but technically unproven) member of the hacker collective Anonymous, and has just recently turned 35, and with his mainstream political career likely over beyond easy recovery in the Democratic Party, far-left former Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich. The default candidates for the Reform Party (which is off-by-default for the same RL reason as the SWP, above) are Buddy Roemer and Laurence Kotilkoff, but, as I said in the above post, Trump can potentially defect to the party and easily hijack it's primaries. All of these are, of course, much like vcczar's historical what-if's from his scenarios, purely optional, just for fun, but they'll be there. I'm open to any additional ideas to add to these.

I think for now I'll try taking this up again, which (as the first post says, is the first scenario of a series of US and other polity scenario's going into an alternate future that I've developed quite a bit about some time ago). I have some new ideas and approaches, and I'll see how things go with them.
