Gimli 2009

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

As much as I liked Matavail's scenario, I'd like to try my own hand at it using the Iceland map.

Here is what I have so far:

PARTIES:

Center (Liberal-Agrarian incumbent party)

Labor (Social Democratic official opposition)

Green-Left (Green/Eco-Socialist Party)

Conservative (Conservative coalition partner)

Left (Communists and Anarcho-Socialists)

issues

Animal Rights

Asylum and Immigration

Balanced Budget

Crime

Crown Corporations

Drug Policy

Education

Environment

Energy

Foreign Policy

Housing

Jobs and Economy

Moral Issues

National Defense

Property Tax

Prostitution

Social Security

Tax Reform

Background: Basically Gimli resembles Scandanavia and the Netherlands. It is close to Stormark politically and economically, but is far more left-wing and liberal. It celebrates "dutch tolerance" with legalised drugs and prostitution, has a social democratic tradition, and its politics lean left, though the right has gained traction on some issues (like crime, muslim immigration and taxes). It is heading into a general election after 4 years of a "grand coalition" between the Center Party and the Labor Party.

Demographics:

POPULATION: 14,076,072

MONARCH: Queen Sigrid II

GOVERNMENT: Constitutional Monarchy

ETHNICITY:

Icelandic 40%

Swedish-Danish-Norweigan 30%

Dutch 25%

Other 5%

Neo-Pagan 5%

Islam 3%

@issue position descriptions

// left to right, 1 - 5

//Animal Rights

Enact a full prohibition on animal testing and ban all hunting.

Ban the hunting of seals. Support enhanced animal welfare laws.

We need greater regulation of seal hunting and animal testing.

Open to animal rights, but not an important issue right now.

Animals do not deserve rights. Oppose any so-called animal welfare laws.

@

// Asylum and Immigration

Gimli's future lies in multiculturalism. Relax immigration laws and allow unlimited refugees. Open borders!

More rights to asylum seekers, and import 1.5% of population per year. Fast-track immigrant families.

For immigration that our economy needs and genuine asylum seekers. Laws must be strictly obeyed.

Place strict quotas on immigration and asylum seekers. Crack down on criminal asylum seekers.

Immigration is destroying Gimli. Stop it now, and expel asylum seekers. Close borders!

@

//Balanced Budget

Who cares about the deficit - massive increase in public spending for social programs!

We need deficit spending to stimulate our economy. Restore government cuts to social programs.

Continue the current path of deficit reduction. Consider a tax increase to reduce deficit.

Consider more spending cuts, start paying down national debt after the deficit is cut.

Quickly eliminate all national debt, large cuts to spending and downsize government.

@

//Crown Corporations

Continue incorporating industries into the Crown Corporations, including foreign-owned ones.

Increase funding to Crown Corporations to improve services. Oppose privatization.

Turn Crown Corporations into public-private partnerships. Increase funding.

More competition in markets. Privatize some of the Crown Corporations.

Sell off all Crown Corporations to the private sector. Full privatization of public services.

@

//Crime

Minimal sentencing for criminals. Establish civilian review boards and diversity training for police offices.

Rehabilitation and prevention, not punishment for criminals. Oppose reactionary "law and order" hysteria.

Tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime. Put 1,000 more police officers on the street.

Create new elite gendarmerie squads, and harsher sentencing for violent criminals. Support a "Three strikes law."

Increase police surveillance and detention powers. Suspend due process and resurrect the death penalty.

@

//Education

Large increase in federal funding. Make free public education at all levels a national priority.

Increase education funding for public schools and universities. Free tuition for undergraduate university study.

Targeted increases in school funding, more national standards. Reduce university tuition fees, merit-based scholarships.

National quality standards and competition. Greater accountability for schools. look at increasing tuition fees.

Full privatization of education from kindgergarten to university. Reduce education spending, replace with fees.

@

//Energy

Renewable energy all the way! Replace oil and gas as soon as possible! Switch off nuclear power immediately.

Encourage renewable alternative energy sources to prepare for the long run. Exit from nuclear power step by step.

Stay with energy mix and research all sources equally. Support a renewable portfolio standard for energy.

Gas and oil are our main concerns right now. Nuclear power is safe and sound. Develop Gimli petroleum industry.

We will always have to rely on fossil fuel sources. Build new nuclear power plants. Abolish the petroleum tax.

@

//Environment

The environment always comes first. Raise taxes on pollution and rubbish collections.

Environment is a priority. Increase environmental standards and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

We must protect the environment. Support more recycling and tax incentives for being eco-friendly.

Support market-based environmental incentives, and reduce environmental regulation.

The environment is fine, cut down on recycling services to save money. Stop eco-bureaucracy.

@

//Foreign Policy

Gimli should become a Revolutionary Socialist Republic and ally itself with Katyusha and the Communist powers.

We should stand up to Stormark more often, especially in fishing policy. Protect our historic neutrality policy.

Keep good relations with Stormark. Take a more active role in the United Nations and for humanitarian causes.

Pursue a Customs and Economic Union with Stormark. Support alliances with Alexandria and New Britannia.

Seek to join Stormark as an Imperial province. Committ ourselves to the Anti-Communist Alliance.

@

//Housing

Massive public housing constructions and abolish rents. End homelessness now!

Long-term commitment to end homelessness: cap rents, and build 40,000 new council homes.

Mortgage tax relief and greater incentives for homebuyers, promote smart growth.

Encourage low-interest loans for homebuyers, and relax planning laws.

Open up more areas to development, and lift regulations on housing market.

@

//Jobs and Economy

The government should run a fully planned economy to ensure both social equality and economic productivity.

Nationalise failing industries. Increase public spending to promote economic growth and protect jobs.

The economy should be free and competitive, but we need a public "green jobs" plan and a higher minimum wage.

Continue path of economic liberalisation to maintain growth and prosperity. Support privatisation.

Government intervention kills economic growth. A fully free market is the only road to prosperity.

@

//Moral Issues

Criminalise homophobic speech and encourage abortions. Promote secular-humanism.

Legalise same-sex marriage . Protect reproductive rights. Defend tolerance.

No formal position on abortion and gay rights. Hold free votes on moral issues.

Protect traditional moral values through legislation. Support restrictions on abortion.

Roll back the Sexual Revolution. Total ban on abortion and repeal homosexual rights.

@

//National Defense

Abolish the military. Create a Ministry of Peace. Pacifism is our best defensive option.

Leave military spending at current levels. Rely on police forces. We must adhere to the neutrality policy.

Targeted increases in defense budget. Focus on peace-keeping and special forces operations.

Increase military budget, be more efficient. Increase troop numbers and procure new equipment.

Increase defense budget to 10% of GDP. Bring back conscription. Reclaim our past glory!

@

//Property Tax

Increase property tax and add new taxes on wealth and pollution.

Reform property tax with progressive rates. Support a carbon tax.

Replace the property tax with a progressive local income tax.

Abolish the property tax and balance it with sales tax increases.

Abolish the property tax and inheritance tax; pay for it with budget cuts.

@

//Prostitution

Support complete legalisation of prostitution. Establish municipal brothels and prostitute's unions.

Decriminalise prostution and reform current laws. Regulate brothels to ensure "harm reduction."

Work to reduce prostitution through rehabiliation and step up efforts to halt sex trafficking.

Criminalise the purchase of sex. Crack down on prostitution, brothels, and the sex trade.

Support a nationwide roundup of all prostitutes. Put all these sexual deviants behind bars!

@

//Social Security

Massive investment in Social Security to protect our "cradle to the grave" welfare system. End all private interference.

Increase funding for Social Security programs. Increase basic provision and extend coverage to include perscription drugs.

Keep Social Security on sound fiscal footing. Public-private pensions and health programs are essential.

Reduce Social Security provisions and promote private pensions and health insurance. Sell off aspects of health service.

Enact full privatisation of Social Security. No government involvement in healthcare. Broad tax breaks for private schemes.

@

//Tax Reform

Redistribute income from the rich to the poor. Impose a windfall profits tax.

Raise taxation on the wealthy and corporations. Keep the Single Business Tax as is.

Close loopholes, moves towards more progressive tax rates. Reform the Single Business Tax.

Implement a flat income tax and simplify the tax code. Scrap the SBT with a new system.

Very good idea! ;)

Did you had any feedback about my Gimli scenario?

However, as the far-right is strong in the Netherlands and Denmark, I would add an anti-immigration party called the Democrats or the Progress Party and I would put the country in a financial crisis with the Social Democrats in power in coalition with the Green-Left (getting as strong as Labour) and the center-right in opposition. The gouvernment is very low in the polls with the center-right opposition rolling high and the anti-immigration party is going stronger in the polls at the expense of the Labour. So, this will be basically the complete opposite of RL Iceland except for the anti-immigration party.

Maybe something like this (with coalitions partner):

Centre: 31%

Conservative: 15%

Labour: 17%

Left-Green: 17%

Left: 5%

Anti-Immigration Party: 15%

Hey Matavail,

Your Gimli version was interesting- but it seemed too much like the Manitoba election.

I was thinking of having Labor barely edging out the Center (due to the economic crisis), but with the Conservatives performing strong while the Left would be barely hitting the 5% threshold. I'd also like to do a scenario where the centre-right doesn't have an advantage (which has been the case for most of my scenarios, save Astaria).

I'll try to throw in some events for this scenario so it'll be a bit more dynamic.

I basically combined with the Conservatives with the Anti-Immigration party since they have a gert wilders as the leader, and basically it's one of the major issues which the Conservatives are strong on.

I'll work on this one for the time being...Ayati is just too intimidating right now.

This one is really easy as it only has 80 seats for me to worry about, along with 8 regions. This should be done fairly quickly.

Do you mind if i reduce the candidate photos to the desired dimensions(large and small portraits) so they're clear? I'll email you them tomorrow.

I actually have used different photos for some. They seem pretty clear right now. If I have any trouble, I will inform you.

I found some nice party logos by scrounging around. I think I used the Center Party from Sweden, the Labor Party from Norway, Conservative from Denmark, Green-Left from the Netherlands, and Left from Sweden.

I tried a game as Siv Magnusrottir, and won easily. I can see just how left-leaning this country is! It plays well, though I think I'll try the Greens & Left next time for a real challenge. Nice flags BTW. Where are they from (other than the Norweigan one, which I recognized)?

Played as Konservative, and i thought it played quite good, and got past the 15% goal easily. Perhaps reducing the party esablishment might make that goal harder or simply just raise the goal a little 18%-20%.

Some of them are Dutch provincial flags, one of them is a historic flag of Iceland, another a historic flag of Norway, another the flag of Frisia, and the national flag is the flag of a proposed United Scandanavia (during the 19th century).

Yes, Gimli does lean left-ward but it does still have a political climate favourable to centrist and even conservative parties, provided they run on the correct issues.

I have won the game as both the Center and Labor Parties, so I'm glad to hear that the others are playable (probably except for the Left, which is intended as a protest party anyways).

Also- the scenario picture is of a Viking statue located in the RL Gimli, Manitoba.
