Australia-New Zealand Merger 2010

Recommended Posts

Hey there,

Right now I'm working on a scenario where Australia and New Zealand form a federation together in 2009 and then hold elections for the new state in 2010. I've decided to put fictional politicians of my own in the scenario. But here is what I have so far, since I'm right now focused on Simland.

Parties

Liberal

Labor

National

Democrats

Regions

Northland-Auckland

Taranaki-Wellington

Marlborough-Nelson

Canterbury-Christchurch

Queensland

NE Queensland

Northern Territory

Western Australia

South Australia

Capital Territory

New South Wales

Sydney

North Shore

Western Suburbs

Victoria

Melbourne

Tasmania

I'm not sure on what issues to add, but this is what I have so far:

Aboriginal Rights

Abortion

ANZUS

Anarctic (India is illegally harvesting ice from Anarctica)

Crime

Drugs

Economy

Education

Environment

Gay Rights

Immigration & Refugees

Industrial Relations

Medicare

Military

Multiculturalism

Republic

Tax Policy

War on Terrorism

Some things to consider:

- Australia has an instant-runoff system by preference voting, while New Zealand has a system of proportional representation. Will this scenario adopt one or the other, or switch to first-past-the-post?

- The Australian Democrats' fortunes seem to be waning. If you include them, then you should also include the Greens (who probably now poll higher than the Democrats); plus, in NZ, there are actual Green MPs.

- Will New Zealand's National Party merge with Australia's, or with the Liberal Party?

1) I may make two versions: one for Prime Minister Forever Australia, the other for Chancellor Forever.

2) I'm not sure right now on this one. I may go with National-Labor-Democrats-Green or Liberal-Labor-National-Democrats since I was going to have a couple socially moderate Liberal leaders. However, it may make better sense to have just one conservative-leaning party.

3) Thinking about it- I may make two versions: one for PMF Australia and the other for CF. One will have National-Labor-Democrats-Green, and the other will have Liberal-Labor-National-Green-Democrats.

Abortion is murder. No legal abortions.

@

//ANZUS & PATO

We should work with the UN to curb US power. PATO is US imperialism!

Asia is more important than the US. Oppose PATO.

We should be friends with the US, but limit PATO involvement.

The US is our best friend and ally. Support PATO.

Stand by America no matter what. All the way with the USA!

@

//Antarctic

End all military operations. Let the Indians have the ice.

We should withdraw from the Antarctic treaty.

@

//Crime

Emphasize rehabilitation. No mandatory minimums.

Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime.

Restore death penalty. Zero tolerance for criminals.

@

//Drugs

Legalise and regulate all currently illegal drugs.

Crack down on illegal drugs. Scrap "harm reduction" policies.

Australia and New Zealand need a War on Drugs.

Take money from wealthy private schools to fund public schools.

Funding priority should be given to state schools.

Equal funding for students attending private schools.

Introduce a voucher system for the education system.

Increase funding. Reduce private sector involvement.

Health care benefits should be means-tested, but generous.

Promote more private delivery of health care costs and coverage.

Support full privatization of Medicare.

@

//Immigration & Refugees

White settlers are the true invaders! Take in unlimited refugees.

A large immigrant intake is good for us. Increase refugee %.

Emphasis should be given to skilled, not humanitarian, immigration.

We should reduce our immigration & refugees intake, and refocus it.

Bring back the White Australia & New Zealand policy.

@

//Industrial Relations

Mandate closed shop agreements for every worker. Limit manager pay.

Unions should play a greater role in negotiating employment contracts.

Employees have the right to negotiate terms independent of unions.

Unions have far too much power. Relax dismissal protections.

Unions should be outlawed. Severely curtail the right to strike.

@

//Military

Abolish the military. Establish a Department of Peace.

Reduce the defense budget. Focus on diplomacy rather than force.

Our military should be used for peacekeeping and to stop genocide.

We need a stronger military and more active in international security.

We should become a superpower. Devote most of the budget to military.

@

Asia is our future. We should become just like them.

@

//Republic

Support creation of a Republic with a directly elected President.

Campaign for 'yes' vote in referendum.

Have referendum, but no campaigning by government either way.

Campaign for 'no' vote in referendum.

We are British to the core and must stay in the Commonwealth.

@

//Taxation

Increase income and corporate taxation.

Tax cuts are neither affordable nor feasible.

Tax cuts should reward low and middle-income earners.

Tax cuts should be universal rather than targeted.

The wealthiest Australians are in urgent need of tax relief.

@

//Trade

The process of globalization should be reversed.

Renegotiate trade agreements for environment, culture, and labour.

Free and fair global trade.

Reduce tariffs, open and diversify markets to promote more free trade.

All markets should be open! Push for free trade expansion.

@

//War On Terrorism

Terrorists are fighting the imperialist policies of the West.

Combat the root causes of terrorism by eliminating poverty.

Focus on better foreign policy, but use military force if we must.

We should not hesitate to use military force against terrorism.

Terrorism can only be stopped one way: military force.

I have the ideas for your parties:

Liberal=Centrist Liberals (Australia) and Nationals, ACT and United Future (New Zealand)

Labor=Labor and Democrats (Australia) and Labor and Progressives (New Zealand)

Nationals=Conservative Liberals and Nationals (Australia) and New Zealand First.

Greens=Various Left-Wing and Greens.

As per the Maori Party, I think that they should be independants.

Another Issue:

//Languages

All Maori Languages and Aboriginal Languages must be official languages.

Maori should be an official language. Consider adding Aboriginal Languages.

Maori should be the official language.

Maori should be the official language only in selected regions in New Zealand

English only!

I'll do this for the second version; and add the Democrats as a (5th) social liberal party (probably would bring in social liberals and the Maori party plus the economic moderates of the Labor parties).

I won't split the right-wing for the Australia version, however. And the language issue isn't really an issue RL in either country, since it's pretty much lumped in with the concept of Aboriginal/Maori rights.

Update: I have almost everything finished, but unfortunately the map that Treasurer made me is rather screwy. I was wondering if someone could look at it and fix the problem with the map? - Thanks!

You can email me @ kurtsg@umich.edu

Have you had anyone to fix it yet? Is it to do with missing black lines on the map? If so, that was my mistake, uploaing it to photobucket decreases the quality of it. I'll recorrect if you don't have any takers.

If you can do this, please do ASAP. Thank you so much! Do you need anything in return?

No not at the moment, but you can maybe help out with my Norwich scenario and possibly after that, Kanchelska, but it's up to you, but that'll be after new year. I'm gonna put up a help thread for my scenario's soon.

Thanks again! I solved the error (I needed to put in constituency populations). However, I'm going to tweak regionalism a bit, and afterwards it should be ready!

BTW, the Chancellor Forever scenario will be for a Senate election for the new Federation the same year.

If someone could make an election 2010 logo using the Australia template- that would be much appreciated.

I'm not too far away from being done- just a couple finishing touches are necessary for the PMF one. After that, I'll start on the Chancellor Forever version.

The scenario is almost complete, just a few finishing touches and it's ready for beta-testing and then submission!

And...4 days ahead of schedule...the scenario is finally complete and ready for beta-testing!

This scenario is excellent, it's quite difficult to win as Labour though.

Are you still planning to port this to Chancellor Forever?

Thank you! Well it is easier to win as Labour if the Nationals are led by the more right-wing candidates of Kensington or Collins- and if Labour runs on their strong issues such as Medicare, the environment, and trade union rights.

I will do this after I finish the current round of scenarios on my plate, which happen to be:

-Simland 2009

-Kozekura 2009

-Alexandria 2004, 2008, 2009
